Cline Cellars Zinfandel Bridgehead United States California Contra Costa County Red 2008

Member Review by larrythek:

As a fan of the often value-priced Cline Ancient Vines Zin (albeit, I sometimes find it to have a bit too much of an artificial toasty-smoky flavor), I was open to trying this premium version of the '08, now available at substantially less than the $28 list from the winery ($15). This is a definite step above the Ancient Vines. Big, rich, incredibly soft and smooth given the alc. strength (15%). Good tart berry frut, with an off-sweet mid-palate. And while, according to the winery, it sees "11 months in new and used medium-dark toasted oak," those flavors are far more subdued than in some of the Ancient Vines. In short, it's an excellent, big zin, drinking quite well now. It will be interesting to see how it ages, but at this point, given how well it's drinking, there's no real reason to lay it down.
