Cline Cellars Zinfandel Ancient Vines Contra Costa County 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

To taste the depth and complexity of flavor of an ancient vine grape just before it is harvested is to understand why the wine made from them is so special. Ancient Vines Zinfandel has flavors of dark berries, coffee and chocolate with great vanilla oak character and a long lingering finish. This wine has it roots in the Cline family's 80 to 100-year old vines in Oakley. From these historic holdings the wine has grown to include grapes sourced from California's finest zinfandel regions. Wonderful, fat strawberry, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Food Pairing: Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this mouth coating rich vintage a nice complement to pasta dishes with a light tomato sauce or grilled meats. Alcohol 14.5%.

Agree with the previous reviewer about the ripeness. Fairly big fruity nose, and similar berry hit on the tongue. Disagree on the tannin. To me this one has fairly tame tannin. No problem with sediment--glass is crystal clear. Very pleasant, lingering finish. US$12.99 at Trader Joe's.

Ripe fruit, balanced and rather tannic for a zin.

This Zin from Cline is such a good bargain with its smooth tannin, oaked raspberry and cherry flavours with a clean finish, but lately I have noticed more than a few "off" bottles (very watery, lacking flavour with some unfiltered residue) that have made me more than a bit wary of the next due to inconsistency!

A wine we purchased a case of for Anne/Andy's last February's wedding. The last bottle went down at Christmas dinner 2013. Everybody who tasted it had good things to say about it. We will miss the taste that goes with the memories.

More serious is the bigger, richer 2012 Zinfandel Ancient Vine, which boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as peppery, black cherry and black raspberry fruit, and a touch of spicy oak. It was aged eight months in one-third new American oak.

The Oakley ranch, situated 40 miles east of San Francisco, is home to Cline s Ancient Vines - some of the oldest and most rare grapevines in California that range in age from 80 to 120 years old.

The 2007 Ancient Vines Zinfandel offers briery, berry fruit, pepper, and earth notes, medium body, and no hard edges. Drink it over the next 1ndash;2 years.

Zinfandel is Californiarsquo;s unique contribution to the world of red wine. the vines that supply this wine are 80 to 100 years old and make a jammy and concentrated red with moderate tannins. Aged nine months in American oak, which gives it a user-friendly style. this emphasizes creaminess over power.
