Cline Cellars Cool Climate Syrah 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells a little sweet but also delivers terrific herbal, floral and medicinal spice notes, with rich black pepper and bacon fat base notes. Juicy and broad in the mouth, there’s nice energy here with lively acids and very finely polished tannins. The fruit profile offers up blueberry and mulberry notes, backed up with balsamic undertones, minty spice and a gentle underlay of toasted oak. A nice dried meat tone drifts over the fruit on the moderately long and red fruited finish. This is pretty delicious. 90pts

A much more subtle and relaxed nose than that on the Sonoma Cline. A touch more fruity there as well. Such a deep and beautiful purple color to this wine, you just want to dip yourself right inside the glass. Lovely smoothness to this wine with a very brief finish.

Intense black fruit with juicy notes and a nice gentle application of oaking. The fruit and wood aromas are very complex. Notes of bubblegum. Nice body acidity with a dry finish and more tropical notes in the finish.

A bit more red berry tones to this one from Cline, and more red pepper spiciness. Still incredibly deep and dark and rich with a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Still lovely!

Somewhat disappointing, because I like Cline's wines and cool climate syrahs. It seems like they let these grapes ripen too far, and they extracted it too much. Almost jammy body, but it feels artificial somehow. Very fruity, with warm red berries, and an almost Beaujolais candied note. Medium tannins and a pleasant acidity keep this from being a flab fest. Better once it came to room temperature and opened up for a couple hours. Not a disaster, but I wouldn't buy this again. $16

Wine Tasting NotesThe Cool Climate Syrah has great color, rich blueberry and black pepper character combined with a cedary-smooth finish and bright acid. The terroir of our "Lazy C" and "Lazy P" vineyards bring forward the cracked pepper and berry notes that are typical of Syrah from a cooler climate. This wine pairs well with seafood pasta dishes, tri-tip steak smothered in wild chanterelles, and chicken satay. The Cool Climate Syrah is very approachable now but will also age beautifully for 5 to 7 years.

This is one of those wines that compels us to consider the Sonoma Coast appellation’s crazy architecture. As long as it has existed, people have said the “true” appellation was in the far northwest, right out at the water’s edge, near Ft. Ross and the town of Seaview. Last week I heard that a group of inland vintners near Occidental and Freestone are talking about a sub-appellation because they think they occupy “the true Sonoma Coast.” But after tasting this wine, and those of Keller Estate, I have to say there’s plenty of truth way down in the southeastern corner of the appellation. This wine comes from Cline’s vineyards just over the western hills behind their Highway 121 tasting room in southern Sonoma Valley. It’s a Sonoma Coast Syrah in all respects, with its central layers of concentrated black and blue fruits sandwiched between summer sweetness and spice up high and warm earth underneath. It’s a great ride in your mouth, with Syrah’s brambly spice and juiciness and some nifty citrus structure going on across the palate. Then it all finishes clean and confident and appetizing – if Syrah’s not a food wine, it’s not worth your time. Speaking of that, anyone making cassoulet tonight?

With its intense color and loads of black pepper, this wine will knock your socks off. Toasty blueberry and vanilla notes round out the palate.
