Cline Cellars Ancient Vines Zinfandel California 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Fred Cline established Cline Cellars in Oakley, Contra Costa, California in 1982. This winery is now well established, but the current trend for all things Rhône-like was not what started Fred down the Rhône varietal path more than twenty years ago. His leap of faith beyond the traditional, well-trodden Cabernet and Chardonnay route stemmed from his belief in the “magnificent old vines in my own backyard”, and it is these vines that still underpin Cline’s efforts. The Ancient Vines Zinfandel draws primarily from a wide selection of our oldest, most historic and shyest-bearing Zinfandel blocks in Contra Costa County. Grapes were planted by Italian and Portuguese immigrants in the sandy, phylloxera-resistant soils of Oakley, California more than 100 years ago. These ancient, dry-farmed vineyards consistently produce fruit of stunning concentration. A small portion of Carignane and Alicante Bouschet has been added. Individual lots of Zinfandel were harvested separately according to ripeness and balance of acidity. The must was fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and then aged in American oak for 9 months. Approximately 30% of the barrels were new." Charlie Tsegeletos, winemaker. The Ancient Vines Zinfandel shows wonderful dusty raspberry, blackberry, white pepper and spice, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ageing in new and used wood has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes. Enjoy now or cellar for 5 to 7 years.

Nice and easy drinking but not as fruity as I like. More oaky and spicy and kind of salty. Wouldn't buy again.

Very nice Zin without the overpowering pepper and spice of many zins.

Winemaker's NotesThe Ancient Vines Zinfandel shows wonderful dusty raspberry, blackberry, white pepper and spice, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Aging in new and used wood has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes.

Ancient Vines Zinfandel has flavors of dark berries, coffee and chocolate with great vanilla oak character and a long lingering finish.

Rather sweet in fruity extract, with upfront cherry, chocolate, cassis and sweet anise flavors. The texture is sensationally soft and beguiling. Try with pork tenderloin in plum sauce.

From vineyards in Lodi and Contra Costa County, an enormously enjoyable Zin that shows its hot climate origins, but maintains balance and integrity. The cassis, cherry, chocolate and oatmeal-raisin cookie flavors finish in a swirl of acidity and dusty tannins.

Bright red-ruby. Reduced aromas of red berries, smoke, gunflint and espresso. Rich, sweet and creamy, with pliant, mouthfilling flavors of blackberry, raspberry and milk chocolate. Fat, satisfying zinfandel with smooth tannins and noteworthy breadth. A great value.

Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of green pepper, cassis, blackberry and licorice. Initially quite peppery and green in the mouth, but grew suppler and sweeter with aeration, ultimately showing a silky texture and good richness without totally shedding its green aspect. Finishes with mouthdusting tannins.
