What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Discount for wine club members only. Established in 2002, Cliff Lede Vineyards encompasses sixty acres of vineyards in the famed Stags Leap District. Owner Cliff Lede, viticulturalist David Abreu, Winemaker Michelle Edwards, and consultant Michel Rolland have come together to form an unrivalled team, making the most of this remarkable property. Vintage An early, warm start to spring was followed by cooler weather during flowering. This led to a smaller and more concentrated crop. A brief yet intense ripening period (temperatures hovered over 100¢ª F for several days) allowed fruit read more...to achieve superb ripeness while maintaining a generous balance of acidity and richness. Vineyards Located on the extreme southern face of Pritchard Hill, high above the eastern edge of the Oakville Appellation, this vineyard is located in a truly rocky, high exposure site that features rich, loose, free-draining, and extremely rocky soils. The vineyard is situated in the northernmost end of the Atlas Peak Appellation, and has an elevation range from 900 to 1700 feet above the valley floor. Born in true sagebrush country, the grapes from this vineyard typically produce high-intensity, dense, and earthy flavors that reflect their difficult upbringing. Winemaking Hand harvested into small 35-pound boxes, the grapes were destemmed to tank for a three-to-five-day, pre-fermentation cold soak. The juice was inoculated and the wine underwent a seven to ten day warm fermentation in an effort to promote extraction. Selected lots were held on the skins after fermentation for nearly a month to further develop the tannin structure. The wine was racked into thin-stave French, chateau-style oak barrels (eighty-five percent of which were new), where the wine was aged for eighteen months. In order to preserve its inherent concentration and rich texture, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Winemaker Notes Complex and inviting aromas of iris root, mulberry, grilled flank steak, sage, and jasmine seamlessly commingle. Their integration continues on the palate as a gentle entry of ripe plums is supplanted by pie spice and dried teas. Soft-edged tannins wrap around a plum core that contrasts with an earthen finish befitting its gravelly beginnings.    (hide)
