Editorial Reviews for Clerico Domenico Ciabot Mentin Ginestra
This offers up complex aromas that are marked by a floral cast over nuanced, earth, licorice, anise seed, mineral and grilled beefy aromas. A touch soft in the mouth and dark and chewy. This is pretty extracted, and full of earthy spicy dark fruit. The wood spice is obvious but well balanced by the fruit but the wood tannins become harsh on the finish which is pretty tight and short. Not exactly what I’m looking for but this seems to be well made if very powerful. 88pts

A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2001 Clerico, Domenico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 750ml
Fantastic aromas of cinnamon violets and blackberries follow through to a full-bodied palate with supersilky tannins and a beautiful long, long finish. All in depth and finesse. A top 2000 Barolo from the 37-acre Ginestra vineyard outside Monforte d'Alba. Best after 2009.
The 2004 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra sweeps across the palate with stunning depth and expansiveness in its dark cherries, menthol, spices, chocolate and sweet toasted oak. It offers exceptional length and delineation, with a note of freshness that provides lift on the close. It is a profound effort from Domenico Clerico. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
The 2000 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra is even warmer and sweeter in aroma with sensations of cinnamon and sandalwood, roses and plums. As potent as the Pajana, it balances the richness of the extraction with more velvet and suppleness, greater depth, and a longer, more complete finish. Drink 2005-2020.
Aromas of blackberries and licorice with hints of oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit as well as smoky oak. A rich and very long wine. A massive beauty. Best after 2008.
Clerico's 2000 Ciabot Mentin Ginestra has fared better than the Pajana, perhaps owing to the vineyard's more sheltered south-west exposure. Layers of mint, spices and crushed rocks add complexity to the generous fruit. The finish remains vibrant, textured and polished, with a prominent scent of oak that is typical of Clerico's wines during this era. I don't see much upside in the Ciabot, but it should hold for another handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.
The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clericorsquo;s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producerrsquo;s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011ndash;2021.
Colour: Dark garnet red. Nose: Intense, complex, ripe red fruit, licorice, menthol, vanilla. Flavour: Warm, soft, fresh, thick tannins, long and clean finish. Serving suggestions: Red meat, cheeses, game.
