Clericoandrsquo;s 2000 Ciabot Mentin Ginestra has fared better than the Pajana, perhaps owing to the vineyardandrsquo;s more sheltered south-west exposure. Layers of mint, spices and crushed rocks add complexity to the generous fruit. The finish remains vibrant, textured and polished, with a prominent scent of oak that is typical of Clericoandrsquo;s wines during this era. I donandrsquo;t see much upside in the Ciabot, but it should hold for another handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2011andndash;2018.

The 2000 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra is even warmer and sweeter in aroma with sensations of cinnamon and sandalwood, roses and plums. As potent as the Pajana, it balances the richness of the extraction with more velvet and suppleness, greater depth, and a longer, more complete finish. Drink 2005andndash;2020.

Fantastic aromas of cinnamon violets and blackberries follow through to a full-bodied palate with supersilky tannins and a beautiful long, long finish. All in depth and finesse. A top 2000 Barolo from the 37-acre Ginestra vineyard outside Monforte drsquo;Alba. Best after 2009.

Good medium red. Exotic, exhilarating aromas of sappy red berry liqueur and woodsmoke. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then superripe and liqueur-like in the middle palate, with an utterly suave texture over firm supporting spine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with serious but noble tannins. There's nothing especially austere or forbidding about this extremely rich Barolo.
