Clarendon Hills Syrah Clarendon Piggott Range Vineyard 2006

External Review:

($165) Inky purple. Deeply concentrated, slowly unfolding aromas of blueberry, mulberry and candied plum are complicated by bacon fat and espresso, with sexy oak spices adding interest. Chunky tannins give structural support to the brooding fruit. Pi... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2005 Clarendon Hills Shiraz Piggott Range Vineyard 750ml

The 2005 Syrah Piggott Range is quite backward currently. Glass-coating, it is deep crimson in color with mineral notes, violets, spice box, black pepper, espresso, smoked game, and blueberry aromatics. Deceivingly opulent, it has enough structure to... Wine Advocate ReviewThe 2004 Syrah Piggott Range (from 40-year-old vines) requires 3-4 years of cellaring. This is a powerful, intense Syrah meant for true connoisseurs who have cold cellars as well as enough patience to wait it out. A perfume of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, blackberries, roasted coffee, pepper, spice, bacon fat, and a subtle touch of eucalyptus is followed by a deep, rich, full-bodied wine that should age for 20-25 years.

The virtually perfect 2003 Syrah Piggott Range is displaying far more character, depth, and potential out of bottle than it did from barrel. The most backward, tannic, and muscular of the 2003 Syrahs, it possesses an inky/blue/black/purple color, incredibly full body, monster tannins, huge concentration, and a striking minerality with all the blackberry, blueberry, and peppery characteristics one expects in a top-notch Syrah. It demands 5–6 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20–25 years. A brilliant Syrah!

Firm, explosive in flavor, with a big burst of tangy blackberry, plum and licorice flavor wrapped in a tight package, with spicy, dusky oak showing, all persisting impressively on a racy finish. Needs time to settle in. Best after 2008.
