What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

The grapes are handpicked and fermented with natural yeasts in open stainless steel tanks at temperatures up to 32 degree Celsius. All the pressings are returned to the 100% new French oak barriques and the maturation lasts for 18 months before bottling without fining or filtration.

This is always the most beautiful wine in the cellar and is the flagship of the Clarendon Hills Syrah Range.

Due to minimal intervention in the winemaking process this wine expresses the vineyard characters as it develops in the bottle for up to 30 years.

First vintage 1994 (but 1990-1993 made)

A saturated purple color offers up concentrated blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice and barbecue spice. The wine is large-scaled- very intense- with a multi-dimensional- layered personality. This wine should be at its best in about 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. eRobertParker Only (Feb 2002) Robert Parker Clarendon HillsClarendon Hills- 25 miles read more...

Rating: 16/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Blackish crimson. Ripe, fruity and evolved on the nose - perhaps not as noble or fine as some of the others but very much more drinkable! Yet the saltiness overwhelms everything else - this is medication rather than wine! Finishes very suddenly.

The color is very dark blood red, almost black with just a little hint of purple. There is an immense variety of aromas greeting you when you first sniff this wine. Black cherries, blueberries and plums. There is an overriding sensation of earthy, mushroom like characters and more lifted aromas with licorice bark, coffee and vanilla. There are some hints of other spices as well with some nutmeg, cloves and fennel. All of this and more follows on the palate. As well as the flavors that are described on the bouquet there are also some sweet toasty new oak characters which are quite prominent at the front read more...
