What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

‘The smoking gun’ of the Syrah wines full of peppery, spicy blackberry fruit - very aromatic with smokey bacon overtones reminiscent of Cote-Rotie Syrah wines from the northern Rhone Valley of France.

Reviews

IWC 90 (8/2003): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of raspberry, mocha, lead pencil and smoke, with meaty and minty nuances. Lush, sweet and suave, with flavors of red fruits, gunflint, truffle and meat. Good rich syrah, but without quite the dimension or verve for an even higher score. Finishes with a hint of chocolatey oak.

Opaque black purple colour. Superb nose with wonderful aroma of blackberry, spice, confectionary, liquorice and blackpepper. The palate is mouthfilling with superb flavours of blackberry, liquorice, blackpepper and dark plums, followed by a subtle layer of toasted oak. (Only medium toast barrels are used.) Fine grained tannins, perfect balance, followed by a very long aftertaste of plum, liquorice, confectionary and lingering blackpepper. Cellar 8-10 years.

WS 93 (8/2003): Deep, dense and brooding. Chewy, with fine tannins around a rich core of black cherry, mineral and anise flavors, finishing with a touch of gaminess. A powerful wine, with no rough edges, just all packed in there for the long haul. Best after 2005. 350 cases imported.
