Good deep red. Distinct aromas of surmaturité: roasted berries bordering on raisiny, saddle leather, burnt charcoal. Hugely ripe and sweet yet somehow penetrating and fresh. An in-your-face wine with fruit of steel. Outstanding depth and persistence. The '96 was even more intensely flavored, but this may be a more stable wine.
