What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

This old vineyard consistently produces very attractive, well balanced wine with no rough edges, just perfume style and elegance. Ages very well. Aristocratic!

Wine Skinny

Silky black fruits are the stars here -- blackberry, black currant, dark plum. With licorice and warm baking spices emerging on the smooth, generous finish. Ready to drink now and over the next 10+ years.

Wine Advocate ReviewA black, sexy beast, the 2004 Syrah Brookman (aged in 50% new French oak) offers up amazingly full-bodied, intense, blackberry fruit intermixed with notions of roasted coffee, flowers, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied, rich, beautifully textured, opulent, and long, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

IWC 92[+?] (8/2006): Deep violet. Intensely aromatic nose shows fresh, floral-tinged blueberry and boysenberry and a suggestion of spicecake. Initially tightly wound but opened to show jammy dark berry flavors and a strong note of licorice candy. This is the most youthful syrah of this set, with impressive concentration and power that bode well for cellaring. Stay away from this brooding powerhouse for at least five years if you're looking for complexity.
