Clare Hill Riesling Clare Valley 2009

Member Review by Vicola54:

In my quest for a white wine that I truly love, this came out as a winner!! Even D loved it (so that means we can definitely buy it again!). Light and refreshing - it wasn't overly sweet like many rieslings. It was slightly sweet up front, which quickly opened into a nice acidity, refreshing mouthfeel, and crisp finish. Had this with a mid-Eastern meal (thanks to David Tanis). It was awesome on its own, and great with the meal (tabouleh, tomato salad with toasted coriander and olives, pita with za'atar, lamb chops). From Bottle: ...this wine displays all the vibrancy and fresh citrus characters that we have come to expect from our classic dry riesling style. It makes the perfect accompaniment marriage with a plate of freshly opened oysters and other seafood... From Laithwaites (http://www.laithwaites.co.uk/Still_White_Wine/Clare_Hills_Riesling/prod506900): Clare Hills Riesling is made by Neil Pike - who has worked hard to make sure his white wines are some of the best around. This Riesling has the signature elegance and distinctive flavour of the Polish Hill River: the hilly terrain here makes it the best land for Riesling in Australia. From WineAlign (http://www.winealign.com/wines/17888-Clare-Hills-Riesling-2009): Made by Neil Pike of Pike and Joyce Wines, this Riesling is made from premium grapes, grown amongst the rolling hills of South Australia’s Clare Valley. Clare Riesling has become something of an Australian classic, and this one displays all the vibrancy you would expect from a classic dry Riesling. The cool climate of the Clare Valley delivers a wine with the typically elegant character of the region.

The Pike & Joyce brand represents the coming together of two long established South Australian families to form a partnership in wine. The Pike family, long established in winemaking and viticulture and the Joyce family, 'fifth generation' horticulturists, have come together to develop this 25ha joint venture vineyard at Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills wine region of South Australia. The vineyard site, which was previously apple and pear orchards, is characterized by steep North and East facing slopes and possesses fantastic gravelly clay and loam soils which are ideally suited to the classic cool climate varieties that have been planted – Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is all hand pruned and handpicked with the fruit being chilled overnight in the Joyce cool rooms, before being transported to Pike’s Clare Valley winery for vinification. Traditional old world techniques as well as modern Australian winemaking are incorporated to produce a style which reflects the variety and region. The Pike & Joyce range of wines has quickly become established as some of the Adelaide Hills finest, with the best still yet to come. Read less
