Winemaker's Notes:

Antinori Villa Antinori Toscana Red IGT Intense ruby red color. Fruity hints on the nose blend well with the toasty, chocolate and vanilla notes from ageing in wood. A complex, harmonious and well-structured wine with smooth tannins and persistant fruity hints. 088586002755

The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. Throughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. Today Marchese Piero Antinori is director of the company, assisted by his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the business. The qualities of tradition, passion and instinct have made Antinori one of the leading Italian producers of fine quality wines. Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new quest to raise our quality margins. As Marchese Piero loves to repeat: “ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation”. As well as the family's traditional heritage of estates in Tuscany and Umbria, investments have been made over time in other areas highly suited to quality wine production, in Italy and abroad, in a quest to promote new terroirs, rich in winegrowing potential. Antinori continually experiment with their vineyards and cellars, with selections of native and international clones, growing methods, vineyard altitudes, fermentation methods and temperatures, traditional and modern vinification techniques, types of wood, size and age of barrels, and various bottle-ageing periods. Piero Antinori says: “We have shown over the years that it is possible to produce internationally-acclaimed fine stylish, elegant wines in Tuscany and Umbria while maintaining their original character”. Looking to the future, Antinori explains: “There are many books in our library but they are never enough for us. Our mission is not yet complete: we are driven to express the vast potential of our vineyards and reconcile all that is new and undiscovered with Tuscany's traditional, cultural, agricultural, artistic and literary heritage. These things represent the identity of Antinori, and one of our greatest strengths is that we are in Tuscany – our essential ‘Tuscan-ness', if you will”. Read less

Tasted at Prince Wine Store (South Melbourne (RP AUD$120). Clear, pale lemon colour. A clean nose, med+ intensity aromas of almond, white peach and nectarine. A dry, med+ bodied white wine with a smooth velvety texture, zesty and carrying more weight than a typical chardonnay. A well-balanced wine with appropriate amount of fruity acidity. Fleshy fruit flavours of peach and honeyed spices. Nice finish. Drink now – 2017. 92/100.

£14.22 2011 http://www.montalbera.it/eng/ruche.php Società Agricola Montalbera S.r.l. - via Montalbera, 1 - 14030 Castagnole Monferrato (At) ITALY - montalbera@montalbera.it £14.22 2011 Quite light. Not very serious since it starts out being very fruity. But then it moves on to give that classic Piedmont depth; this is true especially after its left open for a while/day. Overall its too (in a strange way) fruity for me. Perhaps the 2 rating is a bit harsh but not by much; I think I can find much better.

This wine was made under the supervision of Harald Junglen of Weingut Ackermann. He has been making Riesling in the middle Mosel for years, and Weingut Ackermann is a family-owned winery for many generations. With Harald's guidance and expertise, wine maker Barnaby Tuttle was able to capture the true style and essence of a German Riesling. Even though the fruit was grown in clay, and not slate- this Riesling has that petrol quality on the nose and lively tart zing with the right amount of residual sugar to balance it out. This '09 Riesling was listed as NW Palate's Magazine top wines for 2010.

This brilliant white wine is crafted in northern Argentina’s La Rioja region. The Torrontés grape, a distant cousin of Muscat, produces distinctively aromatic wines, and we think they are some of the best bottles to come out of Argentina lately. The “Plata” is dry on the palate, with notes of mixed white flowers, yellow plums, and even some white peppercorn on the finish. Overall, it has a remarkably fresh character, enabling it to complement lighter dishes without overwhelming them. It’s fresh and surprising each and every time you open a bottle.

Deep garnet-purple colored, 2009 Terra Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon gives notes of warm black currants and blueberries with a whiff of dried mint and some underbrush. Very crisp in the mouth, it has a medium-full body and medium-firm grippy tannins, finishing medium-long. Drink it now through 2014.

91 Points "The Brun 2009 Cote de Brouilly allies lushness of texture to liveliness, lift, and refreshment, and ripeness of blackberry and mulberry with a stone-licking undertone as well as invigorating piquancy and tartness that remind me of chomping down on the berry seeds. Notes of black tea, sage, and mineral salts add further complexity. The 2008 version of this wine, incidentally, turned out better than it had appeared to me (right after bottling) when I tasted it for issue 184, but this 2009 is in another, glorious class, making it a superb value! Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years." Wine Advocate, #190 Aug 2010, David Schildknecht

Lemon gold hue is as dazzling as the nose of Meyer lemon and pulverized sea shell. A generous entry of citrus fruit Crenswhaw melon hints of tarragon and honeycomb envelope the palate. The wine is angular with a dry gravel-like finish (indicative of the soil in which the semillon and sauvignon blanc are grown). Wonderfully balanced the powdery finish keeps you guessing long after your first sip. A grand effort for a selection that could easily go toe-to-toe with many top Pessac-Leognans at double and triple the price. No need to hold this wine in your cellar this Bordeaux Blanc is ready-to-please right now. Perfect with lightly breaded Dover sole or skate pan-fried with a lemon cream sauce. Neil Mechanic.
