Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà is a white dessert (passito) wine produced in the Cinque Terre region of Liguria, Italy. Cinque Terre translates to “five lands,” referring to the five coastal towns perched on high cliffs overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The Bosco, Abarola and Vermentino grapes that make up the wine are handpicked and transported to the winery. This is done by an intricate monorail system as most of the vineyards are in such steep and sheer-drop locations that for a good portion of their journey, no road exists. The grapes are then dried out on racks in a ventilated space until they reach a potential ABV level of 17%. This creates an environment that allows for high levels of natural residual sugars and concentrated flavors to develop. DOC law dictates that the grapes may not be fermented till November 1st after harvest. The riserva wines are aged a minimum three years, but this can be done in either stainless steel, oak or glass.    The resulting wines vary from golden yellow to amber, getting darker as they age. The flavors are honeyed, with slight citrusy notes and white flower aromatics, becoming nuttier and more caramel with age.  Read less
