The 2005 Shiraz Trumps (100% Shiraz from 10- to 60-year-old vines aged 16 months in used American wood) is one of the great values in South Australian Shiraz. This super-intense, mouth-staining, and mouth-filling cuvee is all about gorgeously pure black fruits kissed with sweet oak presented in a full-bodied, beautiful, multilayered, textural, hedonistic style. Consume it over the next 3-4 years.
A great value, the outstanding 2004 Shiraz Trumps is a 100% Shiraz aged in old wood. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue along with a forceful, flamboyant nose of road tar, blackberry and cassis fruit, licorice, and pepper. This opulent, savory, expansive cuvee will provide thrilling drinking over the next 2-3 years. For some reason, this high quality winery never receives the press it merits.
Deep violet. Sexy aromas of candied blackberry, cherry cola and licorice, with a subtle floral element and sexy oak spices. Plump and smooth, the blackberry flavor showing superb sweetness and supported by a supple tannic structure. Finishes on an expansive note of dark berries, with a late hint of fine tannins. Excellent for the money.
The 2008 Trumps Shiraz was aged in predominately new American oak for 17 months. A glass-coating purple color, it displays a smoky, toasty, spicy nose leading to a fruit-filled, succulent Shiraz with a bit of underlying structure. This lengthy effort will evolve for 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now and over the next 6-8 years.
Sweet red currant flavors hold clean and fresh, even as the tannins keep the wine low and black. For braised lamb or gamey meats.
The voluptuously fruity, dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Shiraz Trumps offers up rich aromas dominated by creme de cassis and blackberries with notions of licorice, underbrush, and spice in the background. The pure fruit continues on the palate resulting in a velvety-textured, seamless expression of Shiraz displaying impeccable winemaking. This cuvée was aged completely in old American oak. While it may not be the longest lived Barossa Valley Shiraz, for drinking over the next 5-7 years, it offers considerable pleasure.
Clear, focused and detailed, delivering a juicy mouthful of plum, berry and tobacco flavors, hinting at clove and nutmeg as the finish lingers effortlessly. Drink now through 2018.
