This is the first Sangiovese I have tried. The soft tannins really appeal to me. I also appreciate the versatility of the variety in terms of food pairings. I will be investigating this variety much closer. I purchased this bottle at a location that is not a preferred wine source. The fact that my wife really enjoyed this wine is a plus.

The 2004 Montecucco Sangiovese, a blend of predominantly Sangiovese with small amounts of Merlot and Syrah from the Montecucco district in Maremma, is richer, and weightier than the Rosso di Montalcino, expressing the warmth of its microclimate as well as a subtle use of barrique in its more intense color, sweet dark fruit, toasted oak and licorice flavors. It offers much length on the palate and plenty of style. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2010.

The entry-level 2006 Toscana Rosso is fresh, vinous red perfect for casual drinking over the next few years. I can't think of too many wines that deliver this much sheer pleasure for the money.

    Winemaker's Notes:

Ruby Red color. Fruity, lightly herbal and enriched by hints of spices. This wine is ready for drinking, full bodied, quite soft and balanced. This is a very versatile wine and can match all courses of a meal, especially meat-based courses, salami and cheese.
