The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso possesses striking depth as endless layers of sweet, perfumed fruit emerge with tons of grace. This, too, is an intense, full-bodied wine. The balance here is utterly exceptional, and the wine’s sheer plumpness makes for a highly rewarding glass of Brunello. Succulent dark cherries, spices, underbrush, minerals and new leather come to life as the wine sits in the glass, yet this remains a backward, structured Brunello in need of serious bottle age. The Pianrosso is a terrific effort from proprietor Paolo Bianchini. Ciacci’s Pianrosso is an old-vines selection that spent 36 months in Slavonian oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2024.

Very fruity aromas of raspberry, plum and fresh flowers lead to a full-bodied palate, with round, soft tannins and lots of juicy, delicious fruit. Very attractive. Hard not to drink it now. Best from 2010 through 2015.

Lush berries, dried lavender, briars and smoked bacon. Slides like silk across the palate. Full-bodied, the ripe tannins and medium acidity shape this wine into an elegant package.

Deep red. Brooding aromas of dark cherry, plum, date and roasted coffee. Sweet, ripe and broad but not heavy; very suave and aromatic in the mouth, with good verve. A firmly structured wine that finishes with ripe but serious tannins, an impression of elevated alcohol and very good length. Late notes of leather, game and minerals add nuance.

Very tight and firm, with hints of fresh flowers, berries and fresh meat. Full-bodied, chewy and silky, with hints of mineral and fruit. Long finish. This is a wine that needs bottle age. Strangely, I like the 1998 better and, of course, the 1997. Best after 2006.

In 1985, Giuseppe Bianchini began his quest for quality. Moments after the passing of Countess Piccolomini, Giuseppe learned that he, the sole employee who passionately cared about her vines, inherited the vast Piccolomini wine estate. Evidence of his appreciation and commitment to the Piccolomini legend can be found in the glass mdash; each wine is a tribute to the gracious Countess. Highly regarded palates consistently rank the Ciacci Piccolomini wines in the top 10th percentile mdash; with good reason. Giuseppe believes his strict adherence to sustainable growing practices has significantly contributed to the vibrancy of fruit and the depth of complexity in his wines over the years. Without doubt, these wines speak of flawless quality and exhibit Tuscan typicity crafted in a modern style.

Wild berry, cherry and floral aromas to this Brunello. Full-bodied, with big, silky tannins and loads of exciting fruit. Lively, yet refined. These wines are a joy to taste. Giuseppe Bianchini is a master in the vineyards. Best after 2004.
