Church & State Wines Chardonnay Okanagan Valley Vqa 2007

Member Review by mostlyred:

Decent oaked Chardonnay. Hints of pineapple, buttery-popcorn, honey and vanilla, with hints of nutty notes. Low acidity and fairly dry. Hint of heat/ethanol. Medium to full bodied, with a creamy, satin texture. Lovely buttery and pineapple aftertaste, and oaky flavours. Medium to long finish.

At Church & State, we use grapes we grow on 121 acres of the finest grape-producing regions in British Columbia. We produce 14,000 cases of ultra premium and premium VQA white and red wines in the following varieties and vintages: Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and our full five varietal Bordeaux blend, "Quintessential". Bill Dyer, our Master Winemaker and a driving force in Napa Valley wineries for 27 years, guides our wine-making operations. We age our wines in fine French oak barrels and use modern cellar tools and methods to produce high quality white and red wines. With our main production facility moving to Oliver, the Victoria location will become our secondary wine-making area. The Okanagan winery is located in the heart of the Oliver region, with our soon to be built tasting bar amongst the vineyards on Coyote Bowl. Our Victoria winery is located on the scenic Saanich Peninsula just a short drive from downtown Victoria, the Victoria International Airport and the B.C. Ferry Terminal, amidst pastoral farms and forests on the road to the historic Butchart Gardens, the most popular attraction in Western Canada. Each location includes a wine tasting bar and a shop where you can purchase wine gifts and wine accessories and locally hand-crafted chocolates. At the Saanich winery, we offer a large function room overlooking our vineyards and the peaks of the peninsula for your next celebration or corporate event. Read less

The Dekleva Family Vineyard, located south of Oliver in the viticultural area known locally as the Golden Mile, is a legendary British Columbia Chardonnay producer. Planted in 1971, it is now operated by the second generation of the Dekleva family to grow grapes in the Okanagan. The quality of the Chardonnay in particular is notable. In the 1992 vintage, Dekleva Chardonnay was the backbone of the Mission Hill Chardonnay that won the Avery Trophy two years later at the International Wine and Spirits competition in London. The vineyard also grew the Chardonnay in the 1999 Mission Hill wine that scored the only gold for Canada at the 2001 Chardonnay du Monde competition.Vancouver Island businessman Kim Pullen has been aggressive in his strategy to turn around the struggling Victoria Estate Winery that he bought in 2004. He relaunched it as Church and State, hired California winemaker Bill Dyer and snapped up top quality Okanagan grapes, including the Dekleva Chardonnay. True to form, this wine won a silver medal at the recent Okanagan Wine Festival.Only 181 cases were made. The wine is being released next spring but Church and State has announced that it is taking orders. This is a vibrant wine, with tropical fruit (pineapple) on the nose. The wine’s fresh acidity lifts the flavours, a medley of citrus and apple tastes subtly enhanced by oak and lees notes. There is elegance and balance here. 88 points.
