Chianti Classico Ris Castello di Monsanto Castello di Monsanto Italien Toscana 2003
Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva is a 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino blend aged for 24 months in oak plus 6 months in bottle creating a medium ruby color. It has a sweet scent with ripe, warm cherries and notes of dry earth and tobacco, and an elegant palate full of bright cherry and berry fruit, dry, ripe tannins and great acidity making it a perfect wine for food!
Castello di Monsanto is one of the most respected estates in Tuscany and one of the top producers of traditional Chianti Classico Riserva. Located midway between Florence & Siena, the estate lies on the westernmost edge of the Chianti Classico zone, one of the best areas for Chianti. The estate itself is a landmark, with its distinctive hilltop castle.
Editorial Reviews for Chianti Classico Ris Castello di Monsanto Castello di Monsanto Italien Toscana
The last vintage aged exclusively in barrique, 50% of which were new, 50% second passage. The nose here is deep and gamy with sour tones, yet full of spicy backed black cherry notes. With air this gains a n herbal edge and a deep veal reduction tone that has an impression of sweetness. Rich on entry with plenty of glycerin and then rather dry tannins this offers a rather curious combination of very ripe fruits and unripe tannins with some more wood tannins tacked on at the end. Then fruit gains some black raspberry tones on the finish, which is tannic and tough, before ending on notes of leather and mint. I’m not sure this is going to actually improve in the cellar as the tannins seem much more durable than the fruit. 86pts
Light cherry nose with hints of violets. Nice mouthfeel and a great meaty texture, work well with the high acidity. Deepens into tar and tobacco notes and finishes very nicely.
This tasted pretty good but nothing special. I think I'd want to have another try at this one. There wasn't anything distinguishing about it, either good or bad. Will probably try this one again in the near future.
Had this one at the Daily Catch in northend of Boston. Amazing with a huge platter of lobster fra diavolo.
