Chianti Classico. Il Molino di Grace 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is quite herbal on the nose with a meaty, gamy, leathery edge to the dark fruit that carries some nuanced coffee and almond notes with it. Round and supple in the mouth, this is showing excellent signs of early maturity. There’s still a nice core of fruit here, wild cherry and strawberry over some lichen covered rock tones, but the edges have turned rather flannelly and the tannins have begun to recede in to the fruit. What tannins do remain are astringent and keep this firm and gently austere through the finish which is short and reveals a bit of the weakness of the vintage, though there is a lovely mulberry and mint finale. Lovely aromatics and very ready to drink. 89pts

Il Molino di Grace (the "windmill" of Grace) is located just south of Panzano-in-Chianti in the heart of Tuscany's Chianti Classico region. All of our wines are estate-bottled, and estate-grown using only sustainable growing and wine-making methods. For us, the wine has to be an expression of the place, the varietal(s) and the vintage - and we believe very strongly that our wines do consistently reflect this philosophy. As such, Sangiovese is dominant in five of the six wines we make. We are very proud that in 2004 we were awarded the prestigious "Emerging Winery of the Year" by Gambero Rosso, and one of our wines has achieved Tre Bicchieri in five of the last six years. Additionally, il Molino di Grace was named to Wine and Spirits magazine's "Top 100 Wineries in the world" list in two of the past four years. But mostly, we are proud of our wines and the response they have received from people all over the world. Please feel free to drop us a note or to stop by the winery (we built it - and we like to show it off) if your travels take you to Tuscany. Read less

Smells a little like a barnyard, but it tastes very smooth and fruity

Barnyard funky earthy mushroommy aromas. Really nice on the palate, bright acidity, lovely fruit components, delicate and beautiful.

Definitely one of those prime examples of a wine that tastes way different than it smells. Which is very fortunate because the barnyard on the nose is pretty strong. But on the palate this transforms to rich fruit, thyme and a little gaminess, all very pleasant.

Frank Grace and Gerhard Hirmer of Molino di Grace offered their first Chianti Classico with the modest production year of 1998. With total production potential of 130,000 bottles (about 11,000 cases), the team chose to limit their offering to just a few wines that best show the potential of the terroir and the winemaking team. The 2005 Chianti Classico (1 bicchiere on Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia scale) is a decent "normale" with pleasant aromas of dark fruits like plums and blackberries, and mineral notes of flint on the palate. There’s a game and leather undertone on the nose that’s quite pleasant, and on the palate the classic dark cherry and tannins of Sangiovese come through clearly. Beyond a doubt, you’ll want to pair Molino di Grace’s Chianti Classico wine with rich red meat dishes like the succulent Bistecca Fiorentina, a 2+ pound T-bone grilled over hardwood and served rare — the quintessential Tuscan dish found at osterie and ristoranti throughout the region. One of my favorite pairings of Chianti is with beef steak served tagliata style. Simply grill your favorite cut rare (like flank or top sirloin) then slice it on the bias into thin strips and briefly sauté them in a bit of olive oil, whole black pepper corns, fresh rosemary and salt to taste. For rabbit fans, the Chianti Classico 2005 normale would go well with rabbit in a cacciatore style. And for the elegant Gratius 2004, look no further than a savory lamb dish. Pair it with a boneless leg roasted Abruzzi-style, or with chops grilled over hardwood and rosemary wands Cin Cin! Michael www.dalluva.com/wine-journal

The Il Molino Di Grace Chinati Classico is 100 Percent Sangiovese in the 2007 vintage. The ample bouquet shows ripe raspberry and cranberry fruit character with hallmark cedar and violet notes.
