Cheval Blanc St Emilion 2013
95–97 Points, Wine Enthusiast (Barrel Sample): "This wine has an impressive depth of flavor for the vintage. Acidity and freshness show through the elegant tannins, giving the wine a stylish structure. It is not a powerful Cheval Blanc, but it is so finely balanced." 91-94 Points, Wine Spectator (James Molesworth): "A lovely mix of red berry and blackberry fruit, with focused red currant, bergamot and black cherry notes. A twinge of mesquite, with a note of black tea, hangs on the finish. There's lovely perfume now, with subtle persistence through the finish. This opens steadily at it airs. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Tasted non-blind (March 2014)." 90-92 Points, Viinous (Antponio Galloni): "There is a lot to like in the 2013 Cheval Blanc. Sweet red berries, crushed flowers, mint, pomegranate and bright floral notes meld together gracefully. The mid-weight style of the year is evident, but there is good energy in the glass. Silky, polished tannins round out the persistent, supple finish. The 2013 is 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot. Production will be around 45,000 bottles as opposed to the more typical 75-80,000."

Château Cheval Blanc is one of the rare Bordeaux properties to stay in a single family for over 150 years.
Green pepper, cassis and raspberry aromas. Thick, rich flavors that have lots of spice and acidity. Still quite young even at 5 years, but with the bright fruit and bracing and austere refreshing mouthfeel serve as signs of great aging potential.
Sweet, rich, concentrated nose of coffee and cocoa on the nose, with plums and blackberries. Bramble flavors, acids apparent, but there are beautiful raspberry, blackberry and cherry flavors. Thick and rich, still tight with bold tannins. Good structure and its still tasty but the tannins dominate.
Molasses, clay and spice on this slightly fungal nose. Flavors are bright and rich, with luscious red fruit, tannin and leather, lovely oak and fresh acidity.
Nose is still mainly closed, with dominant notes of ethanol, iodine and dark muddled fruits. In the mouth, its still fairly closed, and not offering a whole lot, but there's cedar, some cherry and the wine is just starting to express itself. Tannic finish, with lots of licorice and iron.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wine. I had it at Robuchon in Tokyo Ebisu. Very interesting structure, incredibly light for a red wine. the tannins were authentically delightful. Clearly one of the most surprising (and good) wine I've had.

Seductive. This is incredibly floral with violets raspberries and hints nutmeg. Full to medium body with a pretty density and freshness. Silky and refined. Velvety wine. Creamy. The Cheval Blanc 2013 is a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot representing around 60% of the total production. It has a complex bouquet introverted at first with pure black mineral rich fruit that feels as if it is holding everything back for later. Very perfumy, with lovely red and black fruit thats pure and refined. Theres a creamy feel, with hints of bergamot, cassis and toasted spice. Long and very suave through the finish. Produced from a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual 56% Cabernet Franc with the remaining 34% percent relegated to Merlot; that assemblage is similar to what is planted in the vineyards today. The wine reached 14.5% alcohol with a 3.75 pH allowing for a rich ripe wine that is also alcoholic and fresh. Placing your nose into this wine reminds you of walking into a flower shop. Very powerful on the palate flavors of chocolate and coffee emerge along with beautiful minerality and superb persistence. The finish is bright and fresh with subtle but well-integrated tannins. Part of the reason for the wines success is the long and exacting time spent harvesting the fruit. The estate took three weeks to conclude picking. Previously they finished the harvest in two weeks.
