Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition Domaine Giraud 92 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"Still in tank, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition has plenty of floral, herb and underbrush notes to go with a core of sweet berry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textured, with ultra-fine tannin, it should be accessible in its youth yet have a solid 12-15 years drink window...92-94" WA 10/13 "Bright ruby-red. Highly perfumed scents of candied red fruit, potpourri and incense. Smooth and open-knit, offering intense black raspberry and cola flavors that become sweeter with air. Closes very long and spicy, with excellent clarity and fine-grained, harmonious tannins...91-93" IWC 01/14

The 'domaine' saw the light of day thanks to Pierre and Mireille's zeal and two families coming together. Pierre Giraud is the son of a long line of winegrowers going back more than six centuries. Descendant of the Arrnenier family, he's always tended his vineyard with loving care. The Buou family owned the village distillery for generations; Mireille has always worked alongside her husband helping to expand the vineyard. Now she looks after the day-to-day running of the Domaine. The story begins in 1974 when Pierre and Mireille took on 4ha (10 acres) of vines as tenant farmers. For 12 years, the domaine would grow little by little through purchasing pieces of rented land. In 1981. Pierre and Mireille turned the family distillery into a winemaking and barrel-ageing cellar. That same year, the domaine 's first vintage would be born. In 1987. the running of the Armenier family's vineyard was handed down to their children. Pierre and Mireille took care of 8ha (20 acres) of 100 year old vines found on the Crau plateau, Les Terres Blanches ('White Earth'), the Gallimardes and the sandy soils around Pignan in the Rayas area. In 1998. Pierre was ready to pass on his love of the vine and wine to his children. Marie and Francois took on the estate hand-in-hand. Under their parents' watchful eye. they devoted themselves to tending vines and winemaking. They focused their efforts on selecting parcel by parcel, doing minimal treatments, upgrading their cellar to make finer and finer wines while respecting family traditions. Read less

Breathtaking dark fruit flavors lead to a stunning display of fig, boysenberry coulis, blueberry paste and anise-steeped black currant all backed by ganache and black tea. The muscle shows up on the pure and balanced finish, characterized by tarry grip and drive. Best from 2015 through 2030.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (60% Grenache, a whopping 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre) is aged in tank (the Grenache and Mourvedre) and oak (the Syrah). This impressive, full-bodied, dense purple-colored wine reveals plenty of sweet aromas of blackberries, black raspberries, licorice, camphor and flowers. It should drink well for 15+ years.
