Superripe aromas of black fruits and gunflint; essence of Hermitage. Dense, sweet and superconcentrated, with utterly primary black fruit flavors. Finishes with great tannic grip and sappy length.
Good ruby-red. Hugely ripe nose combines roasted currant, cherry, licorice, gunflint, pepper and roasted herbs. At once fat and stony, with chewy, tactile flavors of cherry, leather and earth. Most impressive today on the explosive, palate-staining back end. This classic young Hermitage really calls for a decade of cellaring.
This is a plump, soft, inviting wine. It opens with a bit of gently toasted oatmeal and citrus, then expands on the palate to reveal smoke and lemon custard flavors. Consume this over the next couple of years for its luscious forwardness, or cellar it, as it should be fine in 2010 or so.
The Guigal family owns vineyards in Condrieu and in the Côte-Rôtie with illustrious plots producing wines such as ‘La Doriane’ in Condrieu, the famous growths of the Côte-Rôtie ‘La Mouline’, ‘La Turque’ and ‘La Landonne’, Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis, Hermitage ‘Ex-Voto’, produced only in the great vintages and Saint-Joseph ‘Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph’ in red and white, as well as the famous Saint-Joseph red 'Vignes de l’Hospice'. These wines have each become flagships of their appellations. In the cellars of the Guigal estate in Ampuis, the northern appellations of the Rhône Valley are produced and aged. These are the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The great appellations of the Southern Rhône; Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Côtes-du-Rhône are also aged in the Ampuis cellars. This famous Côte-Rôtie red is a dark colour with mauve tints. A dense, expressive and intense nose shows Spices, black fruits and delicate oak aromas. The palate reveals a tannic and racy wine, with aromas of prunes, blackberry and vanilla. It is powerful, concentrated and structured. Robert Parker 91-95 points.
