Domaine de la Solitude:
The vinyard was first cultivated by the Barbarini family in the 14th century. The Barbarini's by then were wine makers of the pope that had moved to Avignon. The current owners mother is the last Barbarini alive. Expect a warm welcome in the simple tasting room. The Lancon brothers and their winemaker are very knowledgeable and speak English.

It's really young, but it's an outstanding wine. It has the tannic bite and good acidity that shows it has the stuff to age. It already shows some complexity and minerality.

The sexiest wine of this quartet is the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape, which comes from 30-50 year old vines and is aged primarily in tank with a tiny amount of the Syrah component kept in small barrels. The 2009 Domaine de la Solitude (Lançon Père et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Secrète is a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, all from the sandy soils around the estate (that would be La Crau), and aged in 65% new oak.
