Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Janasse 95 Premier 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"Most likely one of the top 2-3 wines produced, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a rough blend of 80-85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre (which was harvested October 10) and the balance Syrah... it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades...95-98" WA 10/13 "Inky ruby. Blackberry, blueberry and pungent herbs on the mineral-accented nose, with a floral topnote providing lift. Impressively sweet, lush and deep, showing sexy flavors of dark berry preserves, candied lavender and spicecake. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity...93-95" IWC 01/14

Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Nowadays, all SABON family members work together on the domain : * Aimé SABON : vineyards * Hélène SABON : accountancy - administrative * Isabelle SABON : marketing - vinification * Christophe SABON : vineyards - vinification - marketing Read less

Vintage: 2006 05/22/2011

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is one of the vintage's most compelling wines. Most of the fruit for this offering comes from the estate vineyards in La Crau, and it is usually a blend of 80% Grenache (aged in tank and foudre) and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre that are kept in small barrels. Approxmiately 5,000-6,000 bottles are produced. It is hard to say whether this is the finest wine Christophe Sabon has made since taking over for his father, but what a profoundly great effort! It is an elixir of Chateauneuf du Pape with an inky/blue/purple color and an extraordinary nose of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, truffles, graphite, and spice. The wine boasts enormous richness, incredible harmony, and a finish that lasts more than a minute. It is one of the most outrageously rich, concentrated, and perfect Chateauneuf du Papes I have ever tasted at this stage of development. It should last for 30+ years.

This is awash in fruit - plum, boysenberry, fig and blackberry - all seamlessly intertwined, while hints of graphite, melted licorice, black tea and violet fill all the available space. The long finish has great latent grip. Best from 2010 through 2030.

Really juicy and vivid, with blueberry, boysenberry and raspberry fruit laced with sweet spice, tobacco and fruitcake notes. The long, racy finish has a great refreshing edge and solid, buried grip. Drink now through 2028.

The Chaupin is slightly eclipsed by the profound quality of the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Inky/blue/purple, with massive aromatics, an unctuous texture, and superb length on the palate, it is enormously endowed for a 2006. Very pure for a 2006, with sweet tannins as well as amazing length, it will benefit from several years of cellaring, and drink well for 20-25 years. RP

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (88% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, and 5% Syrah, with only 5,000 bottles produced) is one of the vintageandrsquo;s most profound wines. Inky ruby/purple to the rim, with a nose of incense, melted licorice, asphalt, blackberry, and blueberry with a hint of pain grille, the wine is exceptionally powerful, rich, concentrated, and harmonious, with high but sweet tannins, low acidity, and a spectacular finish of close to 50+ seconds. It is much more approachable than the 2005, but give it 4andndash;5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25 years. The 2006 will undeniably be a vintage to buy across the board at Domaine de la Janasse.

Inky purple. Extremely ripe, deep blackcurrant and boysenberry aromas perked up by an intensely spicy anise character. Fleshy dark fruit flavors are enlivened by zesty minerality, picking up dusty tannins with air but maintaining hugely appealing sweetness. Seems to expand on the long, sappy finish, echoing ripe dark berries and candied licorice. Really seductive stuff.
