The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes had a few degrees of residual sugar to ferment out. It is a blend of 85% Grenache and the blance split between Syrah and Mourvedre. A wine of extraordinary intensity and the potential to garner a perfect score, this inky/purple-colored effort boasts an exceptional nose of black raspberries, creme de cassis, melted licorice, and earth. Extremely full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional, super-concentrated palate, fabulous purity, and over 15% alcohol, it is a classic Chateauneauf du Pape meant for long-term cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+. The question that begs to be answered is, is it better than the profound 2001, 2000, and 1998? It's certainly bigger, but I'm not convinced it is better in a qualitative sense as these are all great vintages for Janasse.

The Chaupin is slightly eclipsed by the profound quality of the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Inky/blue/purple, with massive aromatics, an unctuous texture, and superb length on the palate, it is enormously endowed for a 2006. Very pure f... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. From four parcels of vines, all giving different characteristics to the final blend. This is a beautifully structured wine, almost charming at first, and then packing an intense mouthful of fresh, balanced and dangerously delicious fruit. There is a touch of new wood, but the fruit is the star of this great wine.
One of the vintage's most compelling wines, the huge, dense purple-colored 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes offers aromas of creme de cassis, creosote, and flowers along with immense concentration, body, and tannin. The finish is reminiscent of a first-growth Bordeaux, meaning it is well delineated and tannic. Cellar it for 4-5 years and consume it over the following two decades.
Gorgeous raspberry ganache and spice aromas give way to richly layered but silky smooth notes of boysenberry, blackberry, mocha, mineral and tar. Long, pure beam of fruit resonates through the finish. Fantastic purity and finesse for the vintage. Best from 2007 through 2025.
Possibly the wine of the vintage, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which is up around 16% natural alcohol, actually as remarkable levels of acidity and a low pH for Chateauneuf du Pape. Dense, full-bodied, with an inky/purple color, extremely backward, but with layer upon layer of fruit and richness, this wine has enormous concentration, texture, and body as well as amazing precision and freshness. This is certainly a Chateauneuf du Pape meant for long-term aging and probably best put away for 5-8 years and drunk over the following 20-25 years. This possibly could be a legendary wine in the making.
"Most likely one of the top 2-3 wines produced, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a rough blend of 80-85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre (which was harvested October 10) and the balance Syrah... it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades...95-98" WA 10/13 "Inky ruby. Blackberry, blueberry and pungent herbs on the mineral-accented nose, with a floral topnote providing lift. Impressively sweet, lush and deep, showing sexy flavors of dark berry preserves, candied lavender and spicecake. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity...93-95" IWC 01/14
