Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee Pegau 97rr 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"Always seeming to show better every time I taste it, the 2009 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a rich, meaty, and powerful wine that is loaded with notions of roasted meats, leather, dried garrigue, and tobacco that give way to a full-bodied, structured, and tannic palate. Exuberant and decadent, with perfumed aromas and loads of fruit, this has some dry tannin to integrate, yet is nevertheless one superb drink even now. Ideally, it should be given 3-4 years of bottle age, and then followed over the following two decades...97" RR 10/12 "The bottled 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is as compelling as I thought it would be after tasting it last year. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate’s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. It is an amazingly complex, rich, full-throttle wine that reminds me somewhat of what the 1990 tasted like in 1994/1995. It is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape. If you are looking for the garrigue component, it’s also there...98" WA 10/12 "Dark and dense, with stunning espresso, warm ganache and roasted plum aromas giving way to layers of black currant, braised fig and licorice root. The long, grip-filled finish is framed by a strong roasted mesquite edge and a lingering note of brick dust. A wild wine, with loads going on. Just needs cellaring to turn into form...95" WS Advance 06/12

The story behind the Domaine de Pegau begins in the late 17th century with our ancestors farming a few small fields of vines bordered with olive and cherry trees. The revenue from the cherries sold in the local provençal markets covered the costs of working the vineyards. The olives and their golden oil were for family consumption, whilst the grapes went into producing the already famous red wine of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grape picking was family work which took place in an ambience of light-heartedness and fun but with a respect for quality and even then a vigerous selection of the best grapes. At the end of the row the horse waited patiently for the moment when he felt the wooden paniers gorged with grapes weighing down his cart. Once at the winery the grapes were liahtlv Dressed to break the skins - foulé, (the word means literally press by stepping on), the whole bunches were put in trie vats and then the wine-making took place over a period of 15 days. Times have changed, but this traditional style of wine-making is continued today at the Domaine de Pegau. Read less
