Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo Pegau 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

"The debut vintage for their luxury old-vine cuvee, which is over 90% Grenache, but in theory made from all 13 authorized red wine varietals in Chateauneuf du Pape, the 1998 Cuvee da Capo is a monumental Chateauneuf du Pape. It was actually splendid to drink in its first 5-6 years of life, and then shut down very firmly, and is now just coming out of this dormant period. It is much more delineated than it was in its fat, grapy, almost overripe youthful state, and now shows extraordinary precision and definition. It is still a massive wine, opaque ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of camphor, meat juices, roasted herbs, licorice, pepper, and spice. Thick, unctuously textured, but with zesty acidity and sweet tannin, the wine is still very young, and not yet an adolescent...100" WA 06/10

The story behind the Domaine de Pegau begins in the late 17th century with our ancestors farming a few small fields of vines bordered with olive and cherry trees. The revenue from the cherries sold in the local provençal markets covered the costs of working the vineyards. The olives and their golden oil were for family consumption, whilst the grapes went into producing the already famous red wine of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grape picking was family work which took place in an ambience of light-heartedness and fun but with a respect for quality and even then a vigerous selection of the best grapes. At the end of the row the horse waited patiently for the moment when he felt the wooden paniers gorged with grapes weighing down his cart. Once at the winery the grapes were liahtlv Dressed to break the skins - foulé, (the word means literally press by stepping on), the whole bunches were put in trie vats and then the wine-making took place over a period of 15 days. Times have changed, but this traditional style of wine-making is continued today at the Domaine de Pegau. Read less

Tasted last weekend over several hours. Hot, tannic and awkward. Very forward super-ripe Grenache in the front but little else except for alcohol (16%!) and drying tannins. I don't know if time will help this come around, but we were all disappointed. The '98 Beaucasatel and '98 Cailloux Cuvee Centennaire were much more pleasurable then the Capo.

The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence, the finest example of this offering I have yet tasted (even better than the 1989, 1990, and 1995), spent four years in small barrels prior to being bottled unfiltered. A spectacular effort, it is a monumen... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 1998 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence 750ml

One of the riper, more exotic wines of the vintage, this gushes with black currant, fig and blackberry fruit, all of which has melded together and is starting to show a corrupt edge, while the sweet bacon, spice, mesquite and clove-studded blood oran...
