What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Winemakers Notes

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition exhibits a dark ruby color and a lovely, ripe nose of sweet black cherries, raspberries, pepper, loamy soil, and spice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, relatively soft for a 2005, with light tannin in the finish. It should drink well for 10-15 years. From one of the archconservative bastions of traditionalism in Chateauneuf du Pape, these are classic old-style Chateauneuf du Papes bursting at the seams with sweet cherry notes, roasted Provencal herbs, licorice, and resiny, loamy, earthy scents.

"Restrained, with serious structure underlying the raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors, this shows alluring perfume and a minerally spine on the back end, which really stretches out the finish. A terrific buy in this vintage. Drink now through 2027...93." WS 9/07
