What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

Soil:
Quaternary terrace, with a surface of rolled stones coming from the former bed of the Rhône. The parcel from which this cuvée is produced possesses a complex and varied geological composition, these are the oldest Châteauneuf du Pape vines in existence (about 90 years of age).

Harvesting
The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest. This selection is compulsory and permits the selection of the best grapes.

Reviews

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 130, January/February 2007 ($80) Medium red. Wild, pungent dark cherry and blackberry aromas, with strong tobacco and espresso accents. Deep and rich, with liqueur-like dark fruit flavors, powerful tannins and a meaty, sauvage quality building on the surprisingly sweet finish. A brooding, powerful example of the vintage and in need of cellar time.

"The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac appears to be as good as the 2003, perhaps superior. Tipping the scales at 16% natural alcohol, it exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color, a pure, sweet nose of kirsch liqueur, resiny spice box, garrigue, and licorice, a fabulous texture, decent acidity, and a full-bodied, layered, rich, persistent palate...93-95" WA 3/06.
