Château Vieux Larmande Red Bordeaux Blend St. Émilion Grand Cru 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

"Alc. 13.5% by vol; 92 points - Gary Vaynerchuk: COLOR-really nice; NOSE-great classic Bordeaux, floral, lilacs, perfumed, hints of black cherry & cedar; TASTE-Wow!, I'm very impressed w/ this effort, very complete black cherry explosion, lots of black chocolate, and very firm, structured vanilla tannin flavors which is very nice, little heat but it's a baby, great structure & complexity of fruit, Classic Old World Style wine, reserved, classy, this is a STEAL, great w/ food;""... Château LARMANDE (a Great Classified Growth) is one of the oldest estates of SAINT EMILION. LARMANDE is a place-name which can be found in archives dating from 1585. These mention a visit by the Jurade to inspect the wine there. A stone in the cellar bears the date 1640. The owner at the beginning of the 18th century was called CHAMPAGNE. After he died, his widow continued production at the vineyard for a few years before it was taken over, first by the PION de CASE family, and then in about 1850 by the SAINT GENIS, who came from the Charente Maritime. This family kept the estate for around 50 years, leaving the management of it to Germain MENERET. At the beginning of the 20th century, for partition and inheritance reasons, the SAINT GENIS offered to sell the estate to Germain MENERET. Not having a large enough fortune to buy it outright, he went into partnership with one of his friends, Amédée CAPDEMOURLIN, who also came from a very old Saint EMILION family, in order to acquire the property. In the following generation, Fernand MENERET married Alice CAPDEMOURLIN. Both of them inherited the estate just before the second world war. Their sons and grandsons then ran the estate, bringing the surface area of the vineyard to 22.5 hectares (55 acres). At the end of 1990, Jean MENERET the President and founder of the Association des Grands Crus Classés de Saint EMILION, a well-known figure in the Bordeaux vineyard and who had taken the estate to the highest level, sold Château LARMANDE to the La Mondiale insurance group. From this time, the onus was put on bringing the wines of Château LARMANDE to the forefront of the international stage. The acquisition of a new plot of vines took the surface area of the vineyard to 25 hectares (62 acres), making this estate one of the largest in SAINT-EMILION. Read less

Located only 1.2 km from the medieval town of Saint Emilion, Château Larmande is one of the appellation's most ancient estates. The local archives mention its existence going back at least as far 1585. The diversity of soils (clay-limestone, clay-siliceous, and ancient sand) accounts for the fact that Larmande is such a well balanced and distinguished wine. Château Larmande's state-of-the-art cellar (renovated in early 2003 and used for the first time this year) has proved to be eminently functional and well-designed. The wine is barrel-aged for 15-18 months. Careful attention is paid not only to winemaking, but also to the choice of barrels. The end result is a wine of great finesse.

Dating from the 16th century, this property is located on the outskirts of the charming, historic town of St Emilion. Ranked as a Grand Cru Classe, Larmande relies on Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (30%) and a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon. Soils here are predominantly sandy with parcels on calcareous and sandy clays. The 2001 shows youthful reserve and intensity in the nose. It is firm and quite intense on the palate, with medium weight, soft tannins and a defining touch of firm acidity. Classic expression of St Emilion in a classic year - very well priced! Robert Parker 92.
