Chateau Talbot St. Julien Grand Cru 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Abundant amounts of sweet, up-front fruit give this wine a precocious appeal compared to many of its brethren. It exhibits a dense plum/ruby/purple hue along with sweet boysenberry, black currant, cherry, smoke and licorice aromas and flavors. This deep, medium to full-bodied, classic Talbot should be approachable when released, and age effortlessly for 15 or more years...91-93" WA 05/11 "This super focused and firm, with a bright and intense fruit. Full and super silky, with a long, long finish. Super straight and beautiful. This is better in 2010...92-93" JS 04/11 "Plump and rather open, with delicious plum, raspberry and black cherry fruit melded with spice and anise. This has a nice chocolaty finish, with a velvety feel...90-93 (BT)" WS Web Only 2011

Château Talbot is a Grand Cru Classé (Fourth Growth, Quatrième Cru) in Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, France. The estate was founded in the 15th century by Connétable John Talbot, English soldier and governor of Guyenne, who was defeated in the 1453 Battle of Castillon. It eventually fell into the hands of the Marquis of Aux, which lasted several decades before acquisition by Désiré Cordier in 1917. It was his son, Georges and his grandson, Jean, who propelled the estate to earn the reputation it achieved as one of the top wines of the Médoc in the later part of the 20th century. Jean Cordier’s daughter, Nancy Bignon Cordier and her husband, Jean-Paul Bignon, currently oversee production.    The vineyard area covers 102 hectares, with the majority devoted to red grape cultivation from vines averaging 42 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant varietal, followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot. The whites (Caillou Blanc) are 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. In addition to Château Talbot, which represents nearly 60% of its production, the estate also produces Connétable Talbot as their second wine.  Read less

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Talbot 2010 is showing a little more ripeness and extraction on the nose that is well defined with blackberry black olive and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp acidity coming through. Nice cohesion here harmonious with quite an elegant finish that needs a little more grip and breadth. Fine. Tasted January 2014. This features a fairly plump core of crushed plum blackberry and mulled boysenberry notes coated with tar and driven by a strong graphite accent. An echo of pastis lingers on the finish displaying good latent grip. Best from 2015 through 2027. -JM Wine Spectator.

62% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 5% petit verdot. Harvested between Sep 29 and Oct 4. Coffee, chocolate, earth and wild mushroom emerge up front on the nose, with black fruit following behind. This sleek red shows nice intensity to its damson plum, black cherry, toasted vanilla and tobacco flavors, with a bright, floral-tinged finish. -J.M. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2010 Connetable de Talbot 750ml

Using 62% Cabernet Sauvignon 33% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot the wine offers cassis earth and tobacco scents. Medium/full bodied the cassis filled finish shows a hint of green flavors in the end. Jeff Leve.

Tasted at the chateau and at the UGC the Talbot was picked from 29th September with the young vines and around the 4th October for the older. This is the second vintage under Stephane Derenancourt. A blend 63% Cabernet Sauvignon 32% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot the 2010 has a refined bouquet that for me has better harmony and focus than the 2009 at this stage last year a purity that perhaps has been missing from the estate in recent vintages. The palate is impressive: the Cabernet Sauvignon very pure and focused a newfound sense of mineraliti and elegance and precision towards the finish. One of the best Talbot produced in recent years...but there is still room to improve. Drink 2014- Neal Martins Wine Journal.
