Château Talbot is a Grand Cru Classé (Fourth Growth, Quatrième Cru) in Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, France. The estate was founded in the 15th century by Connétable John Talbot, English soldier and governor of Guyenne, who was defeated in the 1453 Battle of Castillon. It eventually fell into the hands of the Marquis of Aux, which lasted several decades before acquisition by Désiré Cordier in 1917. It was his son, Georges and his grandson, Jean, who propelled the estate to earn the reputation it achieved as one of the top wines of the Médoc in the later part of the 20th century. Jean Cordier’s daughter, Nancy Bignon Cordier and her husband, Jean-Paul Bignon, currently oversee production.    The vineyard area covers 102 hectares, with the majority devoted to red grape cultivation from vines averaging 42 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant varietal, followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot. The whites (Caillou Blanc) are 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. In addition to Château Talbot, which represents nearly 60% of its production, the estate also produces Connétable Talbot as their second wine.  Read less

From bottle the 2003 is showing as well as can be expected. A soft sexy near-term style of claret with a deep plum/ruby/purple-tinged color a big sweet nose of anise creme de cassis smoke Provencal herbs and some spice box it is opulent fleshy not profoundly concentrated but rich enough. Everything is nicely balanced with silky tannin and low acidity. Drink it over the next 12-14 years as this is a seductive wine. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

This is a classic from Saint Julien showing a very sweet nose of anise, cassis, smoke and mixed herbs. Fruit forward with great concentration and silken tannins. Accessible today but can be held for years to come - especially in a vintage such as this one.
