Chateau Ste. Michelle Merlot "Canoe Ridge" 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"An impressive wine is the 2013 Merlot Canoe Ridge Estate. There’s 5% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and it spent 16 months in 59% new French and American oak. Possessing first-rate aromatics of plums, currants, licorice and damp earth, this medium to full-bodied, supple, charming Merlot has outstanding purity and surprising mid-palate density. It’s a sexy wine to drink over the coming 4-5 years." -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate *(91 Points)*

You’d be hard-pressed (just like the grapes!) to find a more influential winery than Chateau Ste. Michelle. It’s Washington State’s oldest winery, getting its start when Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company merged in 1954 to form the American Wine Growers. From there, they created a premium line of vinifera wines in 1967 called “Ste. Michelle Vintners,” under the direction of Andre Tchelistcheff, which is where Ste. Michelle really took off. Their first vines were planted at the now-legendary Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. When a French style chateau was built in Woodinville by Ste. Michelle Vintners in 1976, the winery finally became known as Chateau Ste. Michelle. The terroir is very important for Chateau Ste. Michelle. Columbia Valley isn’t just important because they have over 3,500 acres under vine there - they love the land, and they even helped to make it recognized as an American Viticulture Area (AVA). Columbia Valley produces more Riesling than any other American region, and Chateau Ste. Michelle leads that charge as the leading North American Riesling producer. Chateau Ste. Michelle is known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it didn’t become great magically. They actually have two separate wineries, one for making whites, and another for making reds, which allows them to have complete control of the process. In fact, they’re so serious about the difference that they have dedicated winemakers for each color. While Bob Bertheau is their head winemaker who oversees all wine, Joshua Maloney oversees only the red wines, and Wendy Stuckey cares for the white. This allows Chateau Ste. Michelle to consistently create world-class wines that never fail to surprise judges. Read less

Smoky and a little meaty on the nose with dark aromas of roasted coffee, and a little spicy with hints of ink and stem. Smooth and moderately rich in the mouth with nice firm little pointy tannins wrapped in coffee and fresh plumy fruit. There’s lovely depth and nuance on the palate with black raspberry and red cherry fruit emerging on the backend before gaining spicy toasty oak spice and vanilla accents. The oak is fairly obvious through here but well integrated and in balance with the bright flavors of fresh fruit. 91pts

Spicy deep plum and black fruit aromas are very inviting. A juicy wine with loads of fruit and spice, quite big with a hint of licorice on the finish.

This wine is a chocolasplosion, with touches of prune, blueberry, and nutmeg. Very delightful nose, with just a touch of residual sugar, strong presence of alcohol and tannins.

Bright nose of vibrant blackberry. Full bodied and spicy with complex velvety dark chocolate and black cherries. Slightly chemical finish but really classy stuff.

The vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate was planted on the south face of the ridge that rises 950 feet above sea level. The steep slope and the vineyard s proximity to the river, along with blusterywind patterns, combine to alleviate frost pockets and seasonal temperature extremes.

Sleek, supple and generous, brimming with blueberry and currant fruit thatrsquo;s shaded by hints of dried tomato, currant leaf and sage notes. All of it comes together seamlessly on the fine-grained finish. Drink now through 2017.

The Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot is a complex Merlot with black cherry fruit character with refined tannins. With increased vine age, this wine is showing more depth, richness and layers of dark fruit than in previous vintages.

The dark-colored 1995 Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard Merlot offers candied blackberry and blueberry aromas. Its red cherry, currant and fresh herb-laden flavor profile reveals excellent ripeness of fruit. This medium-to-full-bodied wine has a velvety-textured attack and mid-palate,yet the sever and dusty finish suggests cellaring. Projected maturity: 2000-2005.

Château Ste. Michelle's 1996 Merlot Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard blows away the overwhelming majority of similarly priced California Merlots. This ruby-colored wine's aromatics are dominated by black cherries and rose-like scents. This seamless wine has an appealingly soft texture, medium body, and an elegant, structured character. Red and black fruits are found in its tasty flavor profile as well as throughout its supple finish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

186 acres of Merlot are planted in this vineyard site, and only the finest make their way into this limited bottling. Extolling the virtues of Merlot-ness, this wine offers abundant ripe cherry, red currant, chocolate and mocha flavors that embrace the palate softly, whisper sweet nothings, and depart - until the next sip.

Lithe and polished, nicely proportioned with pretty black cherry and spice flavors that linger enticingly on the smooth finish. Drink now through 2003.
