Chateau Ste. Michelle Harvest Select Riesling 2017
Member Review by Zuiko:
Nice nectarine nose but a fairly simple wine. Needs a bit more acid to balance the sugar. No botrytis complexity as one would like to see from a late harvest Riesling. A bit awkward. My rating--86.

The 2012 HARVEST SELECT IS LIGHTER THAN THE 2011. It is characterized by nectarine but has a short finish. It has a light body and is simple. I'm not impressed. No Botrytis. My rating 75.
This 2011 is an improvement over the 2010. For years, Ste Michelle's Rieslings were just a shadow of their single vineyard wines. With this wine, there seems to be a change. The fruit is much more intense than what I was expecting. It also has a longer finish and a nicer flavor profile. Sweetness is similar to a Rhine district Spatlese or Mosel Auslese.
Sweet wet white wine with only the slightest bit of tart / dry in the finish. Agreeable, drinkable and stand alone, though would also pair well with a light dinner or cheese plate. A memorable treat with character that's likely to induce a craving every few months.
Pretty good. I had low expectations but was very surprised. Would have liked a little more acid but it still wasn't too sweet for me.
This is one of very few riesling's I have tried and is one of my favorites. It is sweet, but not overly and almost a sparkling hint in there. I love it!

Tasting Notes Our Harvest Select Riesling is made in a slightly sweeter style than our Columbia Valley Riesling but still shows the classic Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling character. It offers rich flavors of ripe peaches balanced with crisp Washington Riesling acidity. It’s like a bowl of fruit in a glass! This wine is a great match with Thai food. - Bob Bertheau, Head Winemaker Vintage: • The 2015 vintage was one of the warmest growing seasons on record in Washington state. • Warm temperatures continued through the spring and summer, moderating slightly into fall and extending an early harvest. • Overall, 2015 saw optimal ripening across varieties and yielded outstanding wines throughout the region. Vineyards: • Columbia Valley vineyards lie in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains and receive just 6-8 inches of rainfall annually. • Warm, sunny days and cool evening temperatures create ideal conditions for intense aroma and flavor development in the ripening grapes. • A northerly latitude gives the Columbia Valley roughly two more hours of sunlight daily during the peak-growing season than California, increasing the region’s ability to ripen fruit. Winemaking: • Riesling grapes were harvested in October at the peak of flavor. • Fermentation temperatures were maintained at 50-55 degrees F to preserve Riesling’s fresh and fruity character. • We feature the “Riesling Taste Profile” scale on the back label to illustrate that this Riesling is made in a “medium-sweet” style. Total acidity: 0.68 g/100 ml pH: 3.05 Residual sugar: 4.70 g/100 ml Alcohol: 10.5%

Bright and appley in its initial scents, this isn’t as sweet as the name might imply. It’s buoyed by a brisk, dusty acidity that provides the spine to pair with seafood curry.
