You’d be hard-pressed (just like the grapes!) to find a more influential winery than Chateau Ste. Michelle. It’s Washington State’s oldest winery, getting its start when Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company merged in 1954 to form the American Wine Growers. From there, they created a premium line of vinifera wines in 1967 called “Ste. Michelle Vintners,” under the direction of Andre Tchelistcheff, which is where Ste. Michelle really took off. Their first vines were planted at the now-legendary Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. When a French style chateau was built in Woodinville by Ste. Michelle Vintners in 1976, the winery finally became known as Chateau Ste. Michelle. The terroir is very important for Chateau Ste. Michelle. Columbia Valley isn’t just important because they have over 3,500 acres under vine there - they love the land, and they even helped to make it recognized as an American Viticulture Area (AVA). Columbia Valley produces more Riesling than any other American region, and Chateau Ste. Michelle leads that charge as the leading North American Riesling producer. Chateau Ste. Michelle is known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it didn’t become great magically. They actually have two separate wineries, one for making whites, and another for making reds, which allows them to have complete control of the process. In fact, they’re so serious about the difference that they have dedicated winemakers for each color. While Bob Bertheau is their head winemaker who oversees all wine, Joshua Maloney oversees only the red wines, and Wendy Stuckey cares for the white. This allows Chateau Ste. Michelle to consistently create world-class wines that never fail to surprise judges. Read less

16.66 grams per liter residual sugar Big lime and lemon aromas greet the nose layered over a nice mineral base note with a hint of steel and some heathery floral highlights. Bright juicy acids lend an almost firm feel to this on the palate which shows that hint of sweet roundness balance with the steely mineral acids. Clear and fresh on the palate with lots of mineral character balanced by slightly under-ripe peach fruit and a hint of mango that emerges on the moderately long finish. 89pts

Really nice riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle. Just a hint of petrol on the nose with some lemon zest. On the palate there's some nice ripe apricot, honeysuckle, tangerine and a bit of flint. This has a nice bit of acidity along with a touch of stone that balances well with the medium to low alcohol (12%).

Our new Eroica Gold Riesling offers the best of both worlds, the bright natural acidity of our original Eroica with concentrated, ripe fruit flavors and a touch of sweetness. German winemakers have been making Riesling with Botrytis influence for generations. Eroica Gold combines the trademark Washington acidity with German botrytis influence. The wine offers lush orange marmalade flavors with a crisp finish. - Bob Bertheau, WinemakerTotal acidity: .85g/100mlpH: 2.92Alcohol: 10%Residual sugar: 7.54g/100ml

And last of the whites and one of the top Rieslings I was able to taste from Washington, the 2012 Riesling Eroica offers up racy, well-defined aromas and flavors of star fruit, citrus rind, green apple and edgy minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, off-dry through the mid-palate and clean and fresh on the finish, its a delicious, textbook Riesling that would be a prefect meal starter or to pair up with spicier fare. Drink bottles over the coming handful of years. Drink now-2015. - Robert Parker 91 Points

Light and open-textured, with a touch of sweetness to the apple and green olive flavors, weaving a floral note into the deftly balanced finish. Drink now through 2016.

Continuing a long-running streak of excellence, the latest vintage of Eroica blends fruit from vineyards in the Lake Chelan, Yakima Valley, Royal Slope and Horse Heaven Hills regions. It’s a rich mix of peach and papaya, creamy and slightly sweet (16.6 g/L). The citrusy acids keep a fine edge on the lush flavors.
