Chateau Ste Michelle Columbia Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a bright fruit profile of apples and melons. The mostly stainless steel fermentation provides the crisp character to the wine. Try this wine with pasta with cream sauce.

Chateau Ste. Michelle:
You’d be hard-pressed (just like the grapes!) to find a more influential winery than Chateau Ste. Michelle.   You’d be hard-pressed (just like the grapes!) to find a more influential winery than Chateau Ste. Michelle. It’s Washington State’s oldest winery, getting its start when Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company merged in 1954 to form the American Wine Growers. From there, they created a premium line of vinifera wines in 1967 called “Ste. Michelle Vintners,” under the direction of Andre Tchelistcheff, which is where Ste. Michelle really took off. Their first vines were planted at the now-legendary Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. When a French style chateau was built in Woodinville by Ste. Michelle Vintners in 1976, the winery finally became known as Chateau Ste. Michelle. The terroir is very important for Chateau Ste. Michelle. Columbia Valley isn’t just important because they have over 3,500 acres under vine there - they love the land, and they even helped to make it recognized as an American Viticulture Area (AVA). Columbia Valley produces more Riesling than any other American region, and Chateau Ste. Michelle leads that charge as the leading North American Riesling producer. Chateau Ste. Michelle is known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it didn’t become great magically. They actually have two separate wineries, one for making whites, and another for making reds, which allows them to have complete control of the process. In fact, they’re so serious about the difference that they have dedicated winemakers for each color. While Bob Bertheau is their head winemaker who oversees all wine, Joshua Maloney oversees only the red wines, and Wendy Stuckey cares for the white. This allows Chateau Ste. Michelle to consistently create world-class wines that never fail to surprise judges. Read less

Nice green herb nose with a touch of chili accenting the grapefruity tone that rise above a spicy, perfumed floral tone on the nose. This is fairly rich in the mouth, almost lush yet with vibrant acids that keep the wine from overwhelming the palate. The flavors are deep and fresh, redolent of peach with hints of lime and orange zest. The finish is crisp and fairly long with a nice fruity finale. A bolder style of Sauvignon that remains quite fruit driven without leaning too heavily to the grassy end of the spectrum 90pts

Not a bad sauvignon blanc from Washington state. Somewhat simple, light, crisp, with a nice lemon mid-palate, not too much on the grapefruit side. Good acidity, decent balance and a good QPR.

I think I had the 2009. Nice. Semi-dry with just the right amount of sweetness. Typical gewurz with litchi, a little ginger, and citrus. Anything Chateau Ste. Michelle has been a good choice. Smooth finish. Pleasant and a bit unremarkable. 3.5

My first Gewürztraminer! Smells like a riesling, pear and apricot! Refreshing like champagne, has a little of the bubbliness, nice acidity giving it the crispness. Calming and smooth with notes of dried apricot, lychees (which I love!) and a certain mild spice (cannot figure out what..). It has a certain mild bitterness at the end. Medium dry finish and a nice coating in your mouth! I had it with grilled juicy Salmon and it was great!

I purchased for $4.99. It is an easy to drink, enjoyable wine with some floral aromas, tastes of fruit and spice and good crisp acidity. It will pair well with spicy food, or be a good wine to drink on its own.

TASTING NOTES A fan favorite, this Gewürztraminer is such a flavorful wine with beautiful, expressive fruit and clove spice. This is a lush style of Gewurztraminer with a lot of floral character, yet it still maintains the grape’s natural crisp acidity. This Gewurztraminer is very aromatic and shows white grapefruit, star jasmine and a touch of orange blossom. Fruit flavors of mandarin orange and litchi are followed by a crisp, refreshing finish.

The Chateau produces some 40,000 cases of this everyday Gewuuml;rztraminer, a youthful, spritzy, spicy delight; a tangy wine brimming with crisp flavors of nectarine and orange, enhanced by the addition of 12% Muscat Canelli to the blend. At 12.5% alcohol the winersquo;s residual sugar hovers just under 2%, but the acids keep it lively and quite food-friendly.

Light and modestly endowed with varietal spice, but it has pretty rose petal notes on the off-dry palate. Drink now.
