Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Canoe Ridge Estate Horse Heaven Hills 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

100% barrel fermented, 50% natural yeats, one third new wood, sends 10 months in oak Fairly oaky on the nose and a bit creamy though nicely floral and fresh with tart apple aromas. Starting off a bit soft and round in the mouth this shows off fine clarity to the fruit, rather pear driven with spicy cider apple notes wrapped in a creamy barrel fermented texture. A bit soft in the mouth for my tastes, yet not really low acid in style, the softness continues on the finish, which is fairly long is also on the light and ethereal side for a wine of this style. 88pts

You’d be hard-pressed (just like the grapes!) to find a more influential winery than Chateau Ste. Michelle. It’s Washington State’s oldest winery, getting its start when Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company merged in 1954 to form the American Wine Growers. From there, they created a premium line of vinifera wines in 1967 called “Ste. Michelle Vintners,” under the direction of Andre Tchelistcheff, which is where Ste. Michelle really took off. Their first vines were planted at the now-legendary Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. When a French style chateau was built in Woodinville by Ste. Michelle Vintners in 1976, the winery finally became known as Chateau Ste. Michelle. The terroir is very important for Chateau Ste. Michelle. Columbia Valley isn’t just important because they have over 3,500 acres under vine there - they love the land, and they even helped to make it recognized as an American Viticulture Area (AVA). Columbia Valley produces more Riesling than any other American region, and Chateau Ste. Michelle leads that charge as the leading North American Riesling producer. Chateau Ste. Michelle is known for its award-winning Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it didn’t become great magically. They actually have two separate wineries, one for making whites, and another for making reds, which allows them to have complete control of the process. In fact, they’re so serious about the difference that they have dedicated winemakers for each color. While Bob Bertheau is their head winemaker who oversees all wine, Joshua Maloney oversees only the red wines, and Wendy Stuckey cares for the white. This allows Chateau Ste. Michelle to consistently create world-class wines that never fail to surprise judges. Read less

Vanilla, mineral, almond and baked apple greet the nose with this wine. There are subtle lime and kumquat notes lurking underneath the spicy wood tones but for now they have yet to break through. A nice brisk style that has a lot of sweet, ripe fruit up front that recalls peach, pear and a touch of golden raspberry. On the mid-palate this gains a streak of vanilla and a touch of almond, before the fruit returns on the long, balanced finish. Lot’s of fruit here to be sure but there is a lot going on that helps to put that in contrast. All around a nice, complex, and balanced wine. Drink this at a party. 90pts

The nose here is subtle and seductive with notes of eggshell, lime leaf, butchers wax, and a wildflower sweetness tat is seductive. A leaner style in the mouth, really taut and focused with intense notes of very fresh orange, peach, pear and papaya fruits that even have a suggestion of red berry. A bit soft on the backend yet with great freshness to the slightly exotic tropical fruit flavors. The finish is a little light with a hint of mineral and hazelnut adding complexity. Very nice stuff 92pts

Fairly smoky on the nose at first with backing notes of dried orchard fruits, butterscotch, dried grasses, and a touch of smoked ham. Rather elegant on entry with a soft touch of sweet wood adding an initial roundness to the palate feel. The mid-palate shows more obvious wood and while the wine is fresh and retains a sense of elegance it does have an assertive edge to the flavor profile. The finish shows more freshness with a touch of honeycomb accenting the fresh Asian pear and bright green apple tones that linger on the moderately long finish. This would be a fine match for grilled salmon. 88pts

Smooth and easy to drink by itself or with a bit of ButterKase cheese.

Fresh green apple notes, balanced by a touch of, not unpleasant, sulfur (it might have blown off given time). Crisp and refreshing, there's a soft oakiness that gives way to a delicate creaminess. The surprisingly long finish is of warm vanilla spiced apple pie.

This is a full bodied chardonnay for chardonnay lovers. A rich sunny yellow, it starts as a burst of tropical fruit and apple and finishes with a smooth creamy vanilla and creme and the expected oak. Though the nose may feel a bit mineral it is never sharp or grating.

With an appealing tropical fruit character and rich, creamy texture, this wine delivers ripe sweet fruit flavors with caramel and brown sugar notes.

Though itrsquo;s had some extra time in the bottle, the oaky edges of this wine still seem a little rough and tumble. Or maybe itrsquo;s the banana cream pie flavors mdash; appealing in their way, but opposite end of the spectrum from, say, the minerality of a Chablis. Front loaded, creamy and rich, this has generous amounts of the oak and toast that many consumers crave.

Higher-end than the classic Columbia Valley bottling, but not overly heavy or dense, the Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Chardonnay is fresh and well-balanced, with lemon, pear and banana fruit notes and just a hint of caramel on the smooth finish.

Rich with scents of applesauce and melted butter, this wineandrsquo;s flavors are broad, in the realm of pineapple, with a sweet finish.

Bright yellow. Aromas of nectarine, tropical fruits, caramel and butterscotch. Supple and plump, with oak-dominated flavors of butterscotch, resin and vanilla. In a sweeter style, but I wanted a bit more fruit and definition. Finishes with a saline nuance.
