What to Expect

Riesling is a chameleon of a grape, able to produce world class wines that range from bone dry to unctuously sweet. Germany is most closely associated with Riesling, where all styles are made and the range of flavors runs the gamut from steely and crisp with crunchy mineral-driven flavors to fresh lime, apple and peach flavored expressions - even rich honied, candied fruit tones in the great dessert wines.

TASTING NOTES"We craft our Columbia Valley Riesling to be an inviting, refreshing, off-dry Riesling vintage after vintage. This Riesling consistently delivers classic Washington state Riesling character of juicy peach, apricot, ripe pear, melon, with subtle mineral notes. This is our "every day Riesling" that is a pleasure to drink and easy to match with a variety of foods." -Bob Bertheau, Winemaker VINTAGE 2006 was a year of extremes in weather. A cooler than normal, wet spring was followed by a very long, hot summer. The weather was nearly ideal during the growing read more...season. Summer fell into a consistent pattern of dry weather, warm days and cool nights. Harvest began early, with some white grapes being picked in late August. A cool spell in mid-September slowed things down and allowed more hang time for enhanced flavor development. VINEYARDS Columbia Valley vineyards lie in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains and receive just 6-8 inches of rainfall annually. Warm, sunny days and cool evening temperatures create ideal conditions for intense aroma and flavor development in the ripening grapes. Sandy soils with low fertility and low water-holding capacity enable precise control of vine growth. A northerly latitude gives the Columbia Valley roughly two more hours of sunlight daily during the peak-growing season than California, increasing the region's ability to ripen fruit. WINEMAKING Riesling grapes were harvested starting on September 28th at the peak of flavor. Fermentation temperatures were maintained at 50-55 degrees F to preserve Riesling's fresh and fruity character, using an assortment of yeasts for added complexity.
