What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

2006 Chateau St. Jean Robert Young Chardonnay Alexander ValleyThe VineyardsThe famous Robert Young Vineyard is located in the north central Alexander Valley. The Chardonnay plantings are in alluvial clay soils. Robert Young saw an opportunity to custom tailor a Chardonnay clone that was best suited for his vineyard site. Using the best selection from his original plantings of the Wente clone, Robert Young had his Robert Young Clone certified in 1989.WinemakingSeveral blocks of Chardonnay were harvested individually on different days. Wine Spectator ReviewRated 92 HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDPerfumed floral, tangerine, nectarine and vibrant green pear give this full-bodied wine lots of lively flavors, ending with a long, clean finish that picks up a nice vanilla and honeysuckle note. Drink now through 2011.Wine Tasting NotesFresh aromas of lemon cream, Bartlett pear, vanilla and light tropical notes introduce the nose of this Chardonnay. A medium-bodied entry fills the mouth with notes of melon, lemon oil and cardamom spice. Bright acidity and lingering notes of roasted almonds and vanilla cream on the finish make this an excellent food wine.

I rate this Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay only a tad behind the outstanding 2006 Chardonnay from the Robert Young Estate Winery itself, and since the price of the Chateau St. Jean version is about half as much, it is a relative bargain. Quite a different style than the Robert Young Estate Winery bottling - a little less fruit-driven, a little spicier and toastier, and with a livelier, higher-acid feel to it. Excellent, rich, complex nose of ripe peach fruit and a heavy dose of nutmeg/cloves spices and butterscotch. Ripe, full texture, but with plenty of acidity backing it up, making it feel crisp, read more...

I had this wine with dinner a couple of weeks ago, and absolutely loved it. It was rich and full of complex flavors. I know very little about how to accurately describe wine, but I'd say it had a long, lush finish. I don't like wines described as "crisp" or acidic at all - this had everything I love in a chardonnay.

WS 92pts. - Tasting Notes - Light straw yellow with complex, citrus zest aromas and touches of butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla. On the palate, the chardonnay hints at flavors of cashews, oak, lees and toast. It has a medium body with good mouthfeel and some richness. It is well-balanced, and finishes long.

Fresh aromas of yellow fruit, citrus zest and hints of honeysuckle and smoke introduce the nose of this single vineyard Chardonnay. A medium-bodied entry fills the mouth with notes of pear, citrus, honey and nutmeg. Balanced acidity and lingering notes of Meyer lemon make this an excellent food wine.
