Chateau St. Jean Merlot California 2015

Member Review by jescobio:

Enjoyed this last night 12/8/13 with some good friends. I think the company made the wine better than it actually is. Dark Berry taste with a smooth, very few tanins. Almost a moist texture, Really high alcohol which didnt really attract me to it. However, good value and good sipping on a cold evening.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Bold berry and plum flavors combined with mellow spices make this wine easy to accept, enjoy and understand. The tannins and texture are finely balanced. 15 minutes into the wine and blackberry becomes very apparent and exciting. Pricing is very reasonable with this all around winner.

A solid effort, with rich, focused currant, mocha, mineral and tobacco scents, it manages to find a nice balance between these elements. Best to decant or cellar short term in hopes it softens. Best from 2006 through 2011.829 cases made.

Aromas of sweet black cherry, black plum and toasted almonds burst from the glass of this Merlot. These bright fruit characters carry over onto the palate and mingle with notes of blackberry, dark chocolate and clove. A rich and full mid-palate, with polished tannins, leads to a lush finish with cassis on the close.

Fragrant nose of blackberries, raspberries, oak. Huge structure. Rich, concentrated black fruits, with spicy/minty notes. Soft tannins coat the mouth. Long finish.

Readers seeking a super buy in Merlot should check out Chateau St. Jeanrsquo;s 1998 Merlot (blended with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc). It offers aromas of melted fudge, smoke, and berries, a round, concentrated mid-palate, and a chewy, fleshy finish. While not complex, it delivers plenty of fruit in an uncomplicated format. Drink it over the next 5ndash;6 years.
