Château St. Jean Chardonnay Reserve Robert Young 2006

Member Review by kbrod7:

This is one of my favorite chardonnays. Buttery yet citrus comes through along with a little oak. Overall well balanced which seems to be hard to find in chardonnays lately.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Enjoyed the crispness and smooth finish. The subtle oak flavor was outstanding. Rating 4.5 out of 5.

[Saratoga] Always like CJS Chard. Butterscotch, tropical fruit, lively. Would drink again.

Amazing chardonnay. Much more flavor (caramel?) than their other chards. Good as a drinking wine.

Chateau St. Jean is well known for it's single vineyard wines. Located in the heart of Sonoma, Chateau St. Jean has made wine for over 30 years and was the first Sonoma Winery to be awarded winery of the year by Wine Spectator, a high honor indeed.

Honey, fig, butterscotch and melon get a nice smoky, toasty oak edge. Holds onto a tight core of smoky, fruity flavors that give this an exotic yet elegant mouthfeel. Drink now through 2011. -J.L. Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 94The winery's reserve Chard has consistently been the best among their five Chards. The '05 is a dramatic wine, although oak-o-phobes might find it toothpicky. It is smoky and buttery and caramelly, but a year or so should knit that together with the ripe tropical fruits and make the wine seamlessly complex.Wine Spectator ReviewRated 92Honey, fig, butterscotch and melon get a nice smoky, toasty oak edge. Holds onto a tight core of smoky, fruity flavors that give this an exotic yet elegant mouthfeel. Drink now through 2011. Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90Offering loads of tangerine oil, lemon blossom, pineapple, and brioche characteristics. A full-bodied, dense, fruit-laden effort that will provide pleasure over the next 3-4 years.Wine Tasting NotesThis medium-bodied Reserve Chardonnay opens with pleasing aromas of Bosc pear, lemon candy and nutmeg. Unctuous notes of creamy lemon bar and kiwi fruit are backed by subtle hints hazelnut, baking spice and mineral characters. The well-balanced acidity and complexity of flavors lead to a lengthy lemon oil finish.
