Winemakers Notes

Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren blended in Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc to the Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) giving an extra punch of intensity with black currant and cassis flavors along with the classic chewy tannins this variety typically possesses. The components were aged separately for 9 months in French (66%) oak. Once the lots were selected, the blend was assembled and then bottled.

This wine has almost no nose. Very closed with harsh tannins. I am very disapointed in this "Wine of the Vinatage". Maybe will improve with 5 years?

Upon first approach, this wine meets you with a spicy nose that hits like a sharp wind on a cold winter night. The taste belies the scent and actually soothes any bite you might anticipate. While the disconnect is diarming at first, the bottle will disappear before you can bridge the gap between the senses.

Deep red ruby. Subdued aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Creamy but juicy flavors of currant, cherry and licorice, with a light herbaceousness; very Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright acidity gives this fairly intense wine a penetrating quality. Finishes firmly tannic, with notes of mocha and oak and good cut.

Chunky aromas of red and black fruit mixed with copious oak start it off. The next phase is a spicy clove-tinged, sweet-plum palate that is downright chewy. While itrsquo;s undeniably rich throughout, it doesnrsquo;t hit the highest marks, and therersquo;s a slight green note at the core.

Gorgeous Cabernet, offering a mix of ripe, rich, fleshy currant and blackberry fruit, with hints of herb, olive and sage. Finishes with a firm, structured backbone and ripe tannins giving it depth and richness. Drink now through 2014.

This 250-acre estate was founded in 1973, passed from the original owners to Japanese drinks giants Suntory in 1984, and then to Beringer Blass in 1997. Cinq Ceacute;pages comprises the five Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Merlot (10%), Cabernet Franc (8%), Malbec (4%) and Petit Verdot (2%). Winemaker Steve Reeder uses fruit from Alexander Valley, Sonoma Valley, Knights Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The 1996 was Wine of the Year 1999.

While the 13,000-case cuvee of 1999 Cinq Cepages (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot) is not as prodigious as the 1997 or 1996, it is potentially outstanding. This New World version of a high class S... Robert Parker. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1999 St Jean, Chateau Cinq Cepages 750ml
