Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Chateau St. Jean's Reserve wines are crafted by selecting the vineyard lots from throughout Sonoma County that offer the most generous fruit expression and the ability to age. The selections of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards span from Sonoma Valley to Alexander Valley in order to craft a wine that expresses a full range of fruit flavors. The backbone of this wine comes from the Alexander Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon sourcing from this wine comes from two appellations - the Alexander Valley and Knights Valley. The Cabernet Franc is from our Estate Vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Merlot is also sourced from our Estate Vineyard as well as from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Russian River Valley while the Malbec comes from the warmer Alexander Valley. This Reserve wine consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (82%) blended with Cabernet Franc (7%), Merlot (7%) and Malbec (4%). Individual lots of each varietal were aged separately for three years in small, 100% French oak barrels (100% new) from select coopers. The blend was then assembled, by tasting and selecting the most outstanding lots, and aged in barrels for one year. The wine spent an additional three years in the bottle before release.Fragrant aromas of sweet boysenberries, violets and dark chocolate leap from the glass of this rich and concentrated Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. A plush entry leads to ripe dark fruit, dusty cocoa and mint notes that wrap around the well-structured tannins and linger throughout a juicy finish.Wine Advocate | Robert M. Parker, Jr. | December 2007The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a young, still primary effort boasting a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of creme de cassis, cedar, bay leaf, and loamy soil. Full-bodied and fleshy, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Very drinkable, not very sweet and not a lot of particle taste. A very smooth wine, but not really a whole lot going on.

Smooth and complex, with 78% Cab Sauvignon contributing the firm tannic backbone that gives this such excellent structure. The other four Bordeaux varieties are here as well. The flavors are so interesting: black cherries, blackberry jam, plum sauce,... Wine Enthusiast. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2003 St Jean, Chateau Cinq Cepages 750ml
