Chateau St Jean Cabernet Cinq Cepages 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 35th vintage of Napa Valley Chardonnay is classic Trefethen: a perfectly poised balance of fresh golden apple and spiced pear fruit – with undertones of lemongrass, ginger and mineral – and toasty, clove-y, creamy notes from partial barrel fermentation and sur lie and French oak aging. Rich, yet elegant, juicy, yet beautifully structured for aging, our 2008 Chardonnay captures the essence of Napa Valley and 35 years of dedicated winemaking at Trefethen. Grilled seafood, herb-roasted chicken, creamy scallops and risotto, white-sauced pastas and simply prepared pork dishes all make excellent accompaniments to our Chardonnay, which also pairs well with foods seasoned with thyme and oregano.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Rating: 86/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Here is a mid-sized Chardonnay with clean and direct appley and lightly citrusy fruit tones filled out nicely by a distinctly caramelly, roasted vanilla bean note that lends just the right touch of richness to its aromatic beginnings and enhances an equally likeable and somewhat rounded, decently energetic set of flavors in the mouth. The search for the good $12 Chardonnay must include this oh-so-priceworthy bottling.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Tasting Notes:

Fragrant aromas of apple blossom, peach and hints of lychee begin the nose of this light and refreshing Gewurztraminer.
