Chateau St Jean Cabernet Alexander Valley 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky with a bit of pickle barrel on the nose and lots of dried herbs with just a base note of red fruit. Pretty fruity on entry and with just a hint of RS adding emphasis to the sprightly red berry fruit. The tannins here are a touch hard just the fruit works well on the modest finish which shows nice refreshing acids and some strawberry tones that linger on the palate. This is round, juicy and a little rustic but kind of fun to drink. 86pts

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Fresh and fruit driven on the nose if not fruity with red currant and wild herb notes supported by vanilla, dill and coconut oak. Rather fresh on entry, this layers on black cherry and blackberry fruit over well-measured oak that adds some nuanced savory notes without being too assertive. The tannins are a bit dry, which keeps this firm and fresh right through the firm finish where the wood becomes more obvious, but the black cherry fruit with hints of dried minty herbs never looses the upper hand. A fine little Cab for the money. 87pts

Sweet and frankly oaky on the nose with loads of coffee, carob and chocolate over lightly minty, herb-tinged black fruits. Smooth and balanced at first then turning creamy with vanilla and butterscotch flavors accenting the spicy black fruit. The palate is pretty much dominated by wood tannin with some plummy fruit breaking through but this is a beaver’s dream today. The finish is spicy and somewhat hot with licorice accents, short, and dominated by sweet, toasty wood. Really tough-going today. 83pts

2010 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, CA. This is a delicious cab. Heavy on the dark fruit, cassis and cedar box. I love this deep colored liquid. The tannins are a bit unfinished but otherwise acceptable leaving me with a long satisfying cabernet smile. One further note, how the hell did Kenwood get mixed up with Chateau St. Jean.............Help Snooth.

This wine is heavy on the tongue with a flavor that lasts but seemed somewhat dry to me. A nice wine for the price and I'd recommend it to those who prefer a heavy wine without too much tannin. Not bitter but just not enough life for my tastes.

Full bodied and aromatic. Black current on the nose. Hints of mocha and blackberry balanced with background full of tannins and slight oak. Really decent cab for the money.

Very nice, middle of the road Cab from Cali for a great price. Dark ruby red. Muted aromas but opens with times. Smells of red berry and faint oak. Medium bodied and fruit forward. Well balanced acidity with hints of round tannins with touches of dark cherry. Medium finish. Well done.

Dark and lush, with just a hint of oak, and a pleasant round finish. A trully excellent value in Cabernet.

This Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with inviting aromas of black cherry, wild blackberries, cloves and pomegranate. The nose leads to a plush mouthfeel filled with fresh berry, and brown spice flavors. The wine is well-structured and has incredible fruit density, balance and an elegant finish. This wine is easy to drink now but will continue to reward with age.

Kenwood Vineyard's Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is made predominantly of fruit sourced from vineyards located in the Sonoma, Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. Each vineyard lot is kept separate throughout fermentation and aging to preserve the unique flavors of the individual vineyards that create this consistent, award-winning wine. The growing season of 2005 had a bountiful crop and near-perfect ripening conditions that allowed the fruit to reach its optimum flavor and maturity. After fermenting the grapes in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for 23 months. Before bottling, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were added to the final blend. The result is a rich, complex, and fruity wine that has flavor reminiscent of black current jam and sweet pipe tobacco. Enjoyable now, the wine in this bottle will continue to improve with age.
