Chateau St Jean Cab Cinq Cep 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Robert Parker: The 2007 Chardonnay from Trefethen's estate vineyard in Oak Knoll, in the southern part of Napa, displays notes of pear, lemon blossom, hints of honeysuckle and tropical fruit, a subtle use of wood, and a medium-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. This is a beauty to drink over the next 2-3 years. (Dec 2009)

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Aged in third passage barrique This has a wonderful purity to the sweet, slightly candied notes of barely ripe crushed raspberries with hints of medicinal roots, flowers and bay leaves adding contrast. In the mouth this exhibits a light to medium bodied feel and is very fruit driven with a core of black currant and raspberry fruit that exhibits excellent cut and focus. There are hints of underbrush and herbs on the palate that show up on the big, pure finish with fruit that’s just a touch chunky and an almost spicy note of green anise seeds on the finale. A lovely wine, full and fresh. 90pts

Since 1994 I have been drinking the Cinq Cepages and found this to be my all time favorite blend. Plenty of body, great nose and extremely tasty. I haven't opened my 07 yet but it's sure to be as good as all of the others.

The winersquo;s cherry aromas are almost stewy, thanks to the toast and eucalyptus notes that envelop them; expect more cherry, soy and some herbal complexity in the mouth. Medium-weight; closes with tart red fruit and full-on tannin.

Gorgeous Cabernet, offering a mix of ripe, rich, fleshy currant and blackberry fruit, with hints of herb, olive and sage. Finishes with a firm, structured backbone and ripe tannins giving it depth and richness. Drink now through 2014.

The establishment of the Oak Knoll District AVA in 2004 is in large part due to Trefethen Estate's presence there. One of the coolest regions in Napa, Oak Knoll is the ideal climate for ripe, sturdy Chardonnay like Trefethen produces every vintage. These are wines that drink beautifully over the near term but will also age for many years in you cellar with exceptional results. This 2007 was scored 90 points by Robert Parker who said "The 2007 Chardonnay from Trefethen’s estate vineyard in Oak Knoll, in the southern part of Napa, displays notes of pear, lemon blossom, hints of honeysuckle and tropical fruit, a subtle use of wood, and a medium-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. It may have a statewide appellation, but this wine showcases the winery's skill in crafting complex Cabs at all price levels. With blackberry, cassis, coffee and oak flavors and long, dry, finish, it's a fine, very drinkable wine.

Dense and concentrated, with rich, earthy currant and blackberry fruit that's a little muddled and lacking a sharp focus. Still, it speaks clearly of Cabernet with its concentration and depth. New California appellation Cabernet from St. Jean. Drink now through 2008.

Tasting Notes:

This highly-anticipated 2007 vintage is finally out! And what a gem it is! This classic Bordeaux blend shows amazing power and finesse at such a youthful stage. It’s a magnificent Cabernet with loads of black fruit and hints of dried herbs, olive and sage aromas. On the palate, inviting flavors of currant, ripe black plums, blackberry and roasted oak aromas awakens your senses. Supple and ripe tannins surround a firm structure and lead to a deeply extracted and lengthy finish.
