Quite nice. Tasted it blind and immediately stood out as better than our usual sub $10 fare.

2001 is showing up as one of California's finest Chardonnay vintages in recent memory. Here, Souverain's trademark tangerine acidity has heaped upon it a healthy dose of toasty, vanillin oak and tropical mango and papaya. Don't worry, the citrus is still there to freshen up all that heavily-laden fruit. Delicious, as usual.
A light-styled, but attractive effort, the light straw-colored 2002 Chardonnay reveals loads of tropical fruit, medium body, and a touch of spicy wood. The finish is dominated by peach and pineapple characteristics.
Loads of mango and papaya, peach, pear and spice in this delicious wine. Oak adds intricate notes of vanilla and smoke, but the best thing is the bright burst of acidity that keeps it clean.
High-toned fruit and toasty oak aromatics are enticing, matched by ripe, rich, complex layers of fig, apricot, ripe pear and creamy, toasty, marshmallow-scented oak. Drink now through 2005.
Winemaker Ed Killian handles this Beringer-Blass property, which owns 300 acres of vineyards. The Chardonnay '00 is made from a blend of fruit sourced from Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley.
Flamboyant is the word here. Huge aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, butterscotch, vanilla, smoke and oriental spices are lavishly oaked. The wine drinks rich and creamy and slightly sweet, and will be fabulous with cream sauce and lobster. And look at that price! A super value.
Another fine value is the 2000 Chardonnay, a widely available, 100% barrel-fermented effort. It is a medium-bodied, fruit-driven example displaying notes of acacia flowers, white peaches, and a hint of pineapple. The wood component is largely unnoticeable. This refreshing, pleasant, flavorful Chardonnay possesses good body and texture. Enjoy it over the next 1-2 years.
