Chateau Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Reserve 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

"Deep Ruby with a purple edge, this reserve reflects the best of the vintage in Alexander Valley. The 2003 is a densely packed Cab which exhibits the typical black cherry, wild blackberry and cassis for which this appellation is known. The extended aging in superbly coopered new barrels has integrated the thick tannins and layered nuances of vanilla, espresso, baking spices and leather onto the already complex fruit aromas and flavors. This is a muscular Cabernet, typical of the vintage, which will age well over the next 10 years, but has plenty of accessible ripeness to appreciate upon release." -- Winemaker, Ed Killian VINEYARDS Most (60%) of the fruit selected for the 2003 Winemaker's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from the Chateau Souverain Estate vineyards in the Alexander Valley. About 35% of the blend came from a new vineyard to our program called "Double-J" that lies on a steep hillside in the extreme southern Alexander Valley. We were very excited to see this vineyard reach reserve potential and look for great things in years to come. WINEMAKING With his name on the label, winemaker Ed Killian takes keen interest in his Winemaker's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. He personally selects all of the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard lots chosen for this wine. He vinifies and ages the lots individually in order to best acquaint himself with their true character. The 2003 vintage was aged in 100 % new oak barrels (60% European, 40% American), allowing the black cherry and black currant fruit flavors to better integrate with the extracted mouth-coating tannins. Ed's combined use of French, Hungarian, and American oak adds to the depth and complexity of this reserve wine, with each component bringing a different aromatic or spiciness to the nose. Individual lots are finally chosen for blending to the reserve, and trial blends are made to find the best balance of each vineyard lot which will compose an exemplary and age worthy Alexander Valley Cabernet.
