Chateau Soudars Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois 1995

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/140251 for £10.50. Haut-Medoc is an appellation setup in 1936,although there has been viticulture here for centuries, for red wines produced in 15 communes on the eastern side of the Medoc peninsular strtching nearly 40 miles north of the City of Bordeaux itself. My bottle comes from a small family run estate and consists of 55% merlot,44% cabernet sauvignon and 1% cabernet franc and was aged in oak barrels for 12 months.I started thje bottle last night with my supper of baked chicken breast.I had some difficulty extracting the cork part of which ended up inside the bottle but the wine itself did not disappoint There was plenty of a blackcurrant, plum and blueberry style fruit with a suggestion of vanilla and soft but structured tannins. In short this was a lovely bottle of claret that went well with the chicken.I am obviously not the only one to like this wine as it got a silver medal at the Concours General Agricole de Paris in 1997

Château Soudars:
Eric Miailhe comes from a family with a long history of winemaking [they already owned Chateau Coufran and Chatea Verdignan] and in 1973 he bought a 15 hectare plot of land with a clay and limestone soil that was covered in rocks and brambles and created a vineyard. There are now 22 hectares under vine and  modern wine making facilities on site
